Avoid hear styling as much as possible. I swear by Phyto products to solve hair problems. However, I've read that several drugstore brands, like Pantene & others have conditioners & treatments to help restore damaged hair. You were smart to cut off the really damaged portion.

You should've seen it! It was terrible and incredibly embarrassing. It's called Phyto? Where can I get it? And I blow dry my hair on medium heat, and I haven't straightened or curled it. I'm too afraid ill fry what I have left. :/

Hair up or no heat hairstyles. Deep condition alot, oils and biotin and healthy diet also be patient with it and the hair stylist shouldnt be doing that if she is messing up peoples hair

I agree with everything everyone else has said. Also, be careful about harsh brushing and make sure you use gentle hair ties to avoid breakage! And drink lots of water. :)

You're welcome Emily. Btw, for Phyto read the directions carefully. They are a French company & their philosophy is different than what most Americans are accustomed too. You need very little if each product, and with the exception of about 3 products in their whole line, they are designed to be used only a few times a week. Since hair health is your goal, I think you will find this line amazing. I value hair health over style, and with this line haven't had a spilt end in over a decade- even the during the five years I was blonde! I mix in good drugstore brands when the Phyto products start to over hydrate my hair. If you use them, let me know. I'd love to hear your take. ... Lots of good tips from all of you :)

Phyto used to be the only hair products we kept in my house when I lived with my parents. I had white blonde or red hair when I lived at home and those two colors caused a TON of damage and and were a lot of upkeep. Phyto products definitely helped my hair stay healthy (I bet I would have been bald or stuck with a pixie cut if it wasn't for their products). They were amazing products to use! I also used hair vitamins to help grow my hair after a bad bleaching accident(in the salon) when I was younger and they were great.
Now, living on my own, I can't afford Phyto, unfortunately it is quite expensive, but really really worth it. I use cheaper repairing solutions like coconut oil treatments and minimal hair washings to try and keep my super bleached hair healthy and growing nicely. I would (as everyone else said), avoid heat, don't brush it while wet (and if you have to, use a wide tooth comb). My hair grows super slow so now I take Biotin (instead of the Phyto hair pills I tried before) and I feel like my hair is growing faster than it was before(unfortunately its now growing at the average speed of 1/2+ inches a month)... but I think it should make your hair stronger as well.
Those are just some little changes I've made in my routine and small things I've added to it to repair my hair. Good luck! I know its really rough going to a salon and losing a ton of hair, I lost about the same amount you did, a year and a half ago and I'm still trying to grow it out... but I feel like its in a really healthy condition with these improvements, so there's the good thing!

Natalie and Lara, you guys are life savers!! I'm going to look up Phyto right now! I hope it's not too too expensive. If it is, do you guys know of any reasonably priced products that could help?

Is this the right kind of Phyto?

Emily it is expensive- just get one of the conditioning masks about $25-30. If you use that in with drugstore brand reparative shampoo & conditioner you'll still see a big difference in your hair.

Yes that's the brand :)

Coconut oil is a great and inexpensive deep conditioning treatment you can do at home!
Its less than $10 for a tub and last a while. You just melt it in your hand and run it through your hair and sleep with it in your hair overnight and wash out in the morning and its excellent for your hair! and my hair always feels super duper nice =)
Aussie 3 minute miracle makes my hair feel nice, but I don't know if it is actually doing anything to strengthen my hair =/
Oh if you need moisture, you can get some argan oil and rub a little in your palms and disperse through your wet hair and it locks in moisture! I like doing that when I get out of the shower. I bought a bottle for about $10 a year and a half ago (when I lost a ton of hair due to a salon incident) and I love what it did for my hair, especially at the beginning when I was trying to bring life back to my hair originally
Sometimes I use these little packets of conditioning treatments for about $1 called Henna n' Placenta by Hask and they seem to strengthen my hair more than it makes it soft, but I like to put those on my hair when I'm just at home for a night, I'll leave it on (and sometimes apply heat for a while) and rinse it out before I go to sleep
There are hair masks people recommend with eggs and avocados and olive oil, but I've never actually done one myself! but I find home remedies to be really popular with everyone who is trying to moisturize or restrengthen damaged hair

Coconut oil sounds like it could work really dry hair. Natalie, does it add strength & treat damage too?
Dec 14, 2012

I really want to get the Phyto stuff, but it's a bit expensive! So I'm going to try the coconut oil and see if that helps. I'd rather try the cheaper stuff first, ya know?

I'm not quite sure how it works exactly but everyone here has been using it to naturally repare damage and I hopped on the bandwagon =) I think it has to do something with restoring proteins or helping with the loss of proteins during chemical treatments we endure. Not exactly sure how it does its magic, but I like to use it as a deep conditioner. How would it damage the hair? I always assumed oils restored moisture but I could be totally wrong, it was just an assumption =/
