"Rules" Of Makeup...A Little Rant Maybe?

So I often read/hear people discussing makeup in a manner where it sounds like everything is made of rules. you can't wear this color with that. you can't use a bronzer as a contour. you can't wear this color of blush with this blah blah...and it really bothers me. in my eyes, there is no rule to makeup because it is creativity and you do your makeup the way you feel good about it. I see people going against the makeup "rules" all the time and do they look bad? no...I don't know. just something that upsets me sometimes. I get that maybe you shouldn't have a unibrow drawn in and five layers of foundation...but I just think rules are silly when you're in a creative mindset. maybe I'm the only one that feels that way? haha. p.s. no one be mean pleeeease haha this is just me thinking out loud!

I totally agree with you. You said it all.

I totally agree, I mean you could put anything on your face and if it looks good, no one will question it. I use brown eyeliner for my eyebrows and bronzer to contour. you'll actually find that sticking to the 'rules' of makeup is actually rare! x

I agree with you.
But sometimes people need structure where they have a guide to improve their skills. That's why I think there are some artist out there that like to give that structure if that makes any sense. It's all about sharing eachother tips and tricks. So don't be upset. It's all about creativity and sharing our own experiences with eachother. Hopefully what I said makes sense lovely.

I definitely agree! Makeup is a way for one to express themselves I'm sure their are some guide lines that most people should follow but really their shouldn't be any strict rules its how you feel if you are confident enough to go bold or be different do it! You be you! :)

Oh I thought you were upset lol haha cuz you said you were upset lol. Whoops. I do agree people tend to be very passionate on their opinions. Lol haha that's when you tune them out and dance to your own beat ;)

Haha I could see how Mr saying I'm upset could make you think I'm upset. I guess I exaggerated the use of that term. lol.

I mean the proper technique, lol. That is taught by our lovely MUAs on here and all over. I mean sure if you like it, awesome wear it, whatever makes you happy. If someone genuinely doesn't know something and wants to learn though, it's probably better to give them the proper guideline. Catch my drift? Lol. Thanks for sharing your opinion, I agree whole heartedly, but also disagree in a way. :b

Renay took the words out of my mouth. I agree. You can either take some of those opinions in consideration or dance to your own beat like I said. Do what your heart desires. Art is art. Love it and embrace everything.

I agree with renay (: there are rules and proper techniques! Like using bronzer as contour. It can make your face look muddy if not used properly. They make different products for a reason. They made bronzer to add a healthy glow. They made contour to sculpt the face. Simple as that (: like you would use a black eyeliner as blush. They made these different products for a reason and it's okay to break the rules sometimes but you don't want to go crazy (: end of rant lol.

Okay, there are no rules in makeup, just technique. With that being said, behind proper application techniques you can find a ton of creativity. If you like it, you like it, I'm not going to go around correcting someone if they don't ask for it. If you ask for my opinion on a gradient eye that you label a smokey eye, I will inform you the proper term for it. I'm not trying to be the beauty police, lol, just trying to be helpful. Makeup is similar to any other art form in that it has technique, it's just people are less informed on it and used it much more than more traditional art mediums. How many people have taken some sort of art class that teaches them about mediums, color theory, etc. for traditional art? Obviously that technique makes a painting or sculpture look better, and you still have plenty of creativity, so I don't understand why people bag on those that follow proper makeup technique. I'm not trying to be rude, it's just my opinion.

I agree to an extent :p
makeup is absolutely about creativity & you should always wear what you want. I don't believe in things like wearing certain eyeshadows to match your eyes or hair or skin tone. or not wearing a bold eye & lip together.
however I do believe in technique & in things like not using bronzer as a contour product. it's the complete opposite of what you want in a contour powder. or in wearing certain blushes because they match your skin tone. I guess I'm more of a stickler for face makeup rules than for the other rules (x
it also does kind of drive me nuts when people try to tell me you can have a nondramatic smokey eye & still technically classify it as a smokey eye. I will admit, ahaha.

but you're right, people do get too carried away with certain "rules" when sometimes it really doesn't matter :)

To me there are reasons why you shouldnt do what ever you want it just doesn't look right.... to someone that dosent know any better they will think its perfect but to someone that knows about it will look at you like your crazy, I'm a post a link so you can see why there are rules and why some things should not be done

Agree so much on this post.

I agree with the girls who have talked about proper technique. I used to do a lot of art myself and was always taught that once you've got your technique down that's when you really start getting creative. For example sticking to the art theme: Pointillism is using dots to make up the picture, if you then use long brush strokes and call it pointillism then that's wrong. Same applies to make up.

Granted there are no set rules and if someone wants to use bronzer as contour (for example) and that makes them happy then fine that's great but it does go against the traditional techniques and "rules" for these techniques. Ultimately, I really like exploring "proper technique" and using this in my own make up but ultimately it's up to each individual and they should do what makes them happy.

I know what you both mean, technique is good to learn for sure. its hard to put into clarity exactly what I mean without sounding like I'm against makeup technique. I think I just get my feathers ruffled when people get too opinionated about where and how you put what on your face lol. I always catch myself saying "I'm not supposed to do this but...I like the way it looks" haha.

Becky, the pointillism analogy is my thought exactly.
Wlike I said, I only try to correct someone if they ask me, and on various posts where they ask "how does it look?" Or "What's your opinion on this look?" I get attacked for voicing my opinion. If you ask, I'll tell you, but if your happy with it, who am I to stop you. :)
