I work at a pharmacy and I see and talk to a lot of parents who are happy that this product works wonders for their children but also worry about their daughters getting pregnant while on this medication since it could cause very severe birth defects to the baby. you should talk to your doctor about the specific side effects. however, It is great that you took the pledge of abstinence. best of luck!

I used to have cystic acne as well but I never tried Accutane, it just seemed like too much, and now I'm glad that I didn't.
Now I use essential oils and they have really helped, I don't even get full blown pimples anymore!
Here's an article about natural remedies for acne that you might want to try out first: http://empoweredsustenance.com/7-secrets-to-cure-acne-without-chemicals/
Good luck! I know what you're going through.

I've suffered from acne since I was a teen and have tried a couple different things. I was on minocycline for a few years (which worked well for *awhile*), but my body eventually got immune to it, so now I take Bactrim daily. I have not had any adverse side effects of any kind.
Also pay attention to your diet bc that can definitely affect breakouts. Certain foods, like dairy, as well as certain vitamins & supplements (like dandelion) can also counteract or significantly reduce the effectiveness of your acne medications & antibiotics.
So make sure to sit down and discuss all those things with your derm.

For internally fighting acne though, as your derm if minocycline or bactrim are worth a shot (both antibiotics, but without the same potentially severe side effects of Accutane)... With either of these, you should NOT take with food (you have to wait at least two hours). ( I take mine right before bed. )

Look up YouTube videos of life after Accutane *when it does have bad side effects*. I remember watching one (out of curiosity) where a young guy was listing everything that Accutane ruined in his life. (We're talking serious depression, energy deficiencies, abnormal hair growth...among others...)
I've heard that an oil cleansing method could work if you're able to stay with it during the beginning breakout. Accutane seems so harsh and some of the symptoms DO NOT go away. Please choose carefully!

I have heard great things from people who have done Accutane. Honestly, it's up to you. If your doctor thinks that is the best course and next step, I would listen to them. Of course if you want to you could definitely try a higher dose of Tretinoin. That's what I'm on along with antibiotics by mouth (doxycycline) and another topical called AcZone. A higher dose of the Tretinoin might help more. But as I said, your doctor is thinking of what's best for you and they are suggesting this because they think the benefits will outweigh the risks and side effects. There will always be two sides of the coin: absolute success stories and then horror stories. You just kind of have to have an open mind and try things for you and see how you personally react to them. It's good to see each side of the coin but at the end of the day you aren't going to know how it works/doesn't work for you until you experience it for yourself.
Also, on Accutane I'm pretty sure they make any female sign an agreement they will not get pregnant on the medication. That's why they suggest birth control but if you are not sexually active I don't see why you would need to take it. I'm not sure if that's the way it works 100% but I know I've seen something along those lines mentioned in the fine print of advertisments I've seen for it. Anyway, I think it's something you should consider if your doctor thinks it's a good next step. Just keep an eye out for side effects and report them to your doctor ASAP. Everyone reacts to medication differently, you may not have any of the side effects. They also do frequent check ups to make sure nothing is being effected negatively. If something was to effect you badly they would most likely catch it quickly and you could stop taking it.

I went on accutane and it was a literal blessing from God for me! I had awful cystic acne since 7th grade and not to mention plenty of scaring! Now I'm in 11 grade and I put on a lil powder and I'm ready to go!:) it's not for everyone but if the acne really bothers you (it made me the most insecure and shy girl ever) then I would suggest seeing a dermatologist and trying it out! I feel so much more confident and happy with clear skin and I hope you will be able to too:) btw the side effects to me wore defiantly worth the end result! Just remember to use a good lotion and bring Chapstick with you EVERYWHERE!! Haha.
