I've always found these questions interesting because we all know that's what companies have in mind when they do these type of things.
I'm wondering how many of you have tried gimicky products & I want to know your experience with them. Because if a product makes my life easier/better, than I'd buy it!!!
& with packaging, I'll admit - pretty packaging makes my heart melt. I regret almost every day of my life not buying anything from the Hello Kitty Collection back in Feb 09. Not because I expect great quality, but because I wanted makeup with Hello Kitty on it. XD
I'll post examples.

(P.S - I'm not bashing any of the products pictured - they're purely examples)
so do you guys fall for this kind of stuff?

Never, I care more about the actual product inside. However I did get excited about the Hello Kitty collection from MAC. I'm never going to B2M that lipstick. lol

im guilty of buying things because of packaging. i bought a two shadows from the style warrior collection back in 09 and i probably used them one time. i finally decided to give them to my sister because they were more her colors and they were just sitting in my drawer unused.

I actually bought the Lash Accelerator in your example purely based on the claims made on the packaging. And I used to work in Advertising so I should know better! I love Benefit products, but I only tried them because I thought they had such cute packaging. Fortunately that worked out for me, and I have found some of my favorite products in the Benefit line!

Naturally yes I love nice packaging lol. But I need the product to work well or i don't buy. I usually spend lots of time making sure it's worth the money and it's not all just nice packaging because I am a sucker for nice packaging. With experience I do stay away from those items that claim to do certain things but don't really work out that way. So Gimmick no, Nice packaging, yes if the product works too. :)

packaging is definitely my weakness!! its such a shame when products come in a beautifully designed container, but the products itself suck! in the wonder women collection, i fell in love with the cute packaging, i ended up buying the eyeshadow palette in lady justice (all blues) just because it looked cute together, but i put it on and it was eh... that was a good $40 down the drain!!

I'm a huge sucker for anything Hello Kitty too. Those drugstore mascara commercials on TV always get me. What can I say, they always make Drew Barrymore's lashes look so good!! :(

i don't. i'm all about the product :) sometimes i start to appreciate the packaging once i've owned it for awhile (like urban decay's sustainable palette) but it's not what leads me to buy it

I get this a lot with all of the Clinique Bonus gifts haha! Every time they have one I go and get it even though I don't really need it! Just looking around my room now I see about 6-7 of the bags that have come with it. I also have a whole bunch of the sample mascaras.
I guess i'm just attracted to both the adorable packing of the bags along with all of the free samples you get. I admit though, because of this I was introduced to Clinique's Moisture Surge moisturizer which is my favorite of all time!
Oh. And I almost forgot the Buxom Stay There eyeshadows with the adorable doggies on the boxes <3

I'm a sucker for packaging! Especially when it comes to MAC collections. Now when it comes to gimmicks, as in "try this cream and your boobs will grow" stuff; most of the time I don't fall for them! HA!

Tbh, I did buy the lash accelerator because my favorite actress, Zooey Deschanel, was in the advertisement! :) HOWEVER, It worked really well for me.. the lash "accelerating" I can't speak for but.. my lashes looked great w/ that mascara! :)

@Jackee M. "try this cream and your boobs will grow" stuff. That made me laugh!! So true lol
I do like to have lovely looking packaging and also what the product looks like out of the packaging, nothing quite like bringing out your Versace or Chanel lippy in the ladies. Yes girl, I know how to spend!!
Not that I want to show off but I like to lead by example.
Buy nice.. look AMAZING!! ;o) xxxx

Gimicky products don't really grab me unless I have seen or read great reviews on the product itself from a few people.
I am a total sucker for packaging on the other hand, which is amazing when the product is awesome and a let down when it is not to great.

I'm pretty good at bypassing the gimicky stuff b/c someone on youtube usually does a reviewon it ne ways, but in terms of pretty packaging yes i'm a biiiiig sucker for it. Like Urband Decay's new fall palette or watever it is, the packaging itself made me want to buy it, the box is gorgeous!

I'll easily admit that I looove certain packaging and may be more likely to buy something with nicer packaging than things that look cheap because of the packaging... but I also need to have heard good reviews on the product.

I appreciate well-thought packaging, however, I've taken many classes related to green-design, so I'm not as much of a sap for it compared to before I knew how much waste it contributed to our dumpsites. I'm more for understated, unless the packaging is truly unique and well-thought out. I love my Bvlgari Omnia Crystaline perfume because the packaging is so unique, but it is plastic and easily recyclable. Glass requires more energy to repurpose... Plastic, not as much.
If any of you are truly interested in changing your views on packaging and the life cycle of objects in our lives, read Cradle 2 Cradle. =)
Be mindful of the waste you contribute to the world so our future generations can enjoy what we have today. =D

@ GretalRabbit L. - that's my biggest problem! I'll buy colors I KNOW would never work for me just because they look so nice on the pan. haha

hell yea..we can;t help it wer women an if they say no its a lie cause im sure we all have lotsss of makeup an we don't even use it all but just like product is important so is packaging its 50% package 50% product it all goes hand in hand..its kinda like when people say you eat with your eyes first ..then you go get that tasty looking cup cake lol

^ YES! Chanel is my downfall. I used to spend SO MUCH on pressed powders & other compacted make up just to be able to pull it out & feel fancy w/ Chanel in my hands. Granted, the quality was always great - but I would have never spent $50 for a pressed powder ever if it wasn't Chanel. XD

Of course I do! I wish I didn't but I've bought mediocre products because the packaging was great, and passed great products by because they didn't have a "hook".
