I just did a post on 3 of my favorite birthday gifts (my birthday was the 12th) and they all happen to be beauty related ;) Surprise, surprise! That made me think. I know some people that would prefer not to get something like makeup as a gift and others (one of my sisters immediately comes to mind--she's a makeupaholic in training) that would love it!
What about you? Would you be thrilled to get makeup for your birthday or a holiday or would you be disappointed? Would it weird you out if it was from your significant other or would that be a huge plus?
I have to admit, my family and husband know a lot about what I like when it comes to beauty products and what the newest products I'm eyeing are, so that definitely gives them an advantage! I guess if you're unsure, make sure you include a gift receipt ;)

My boyfriend buying me makeup would be super exciting, because he hates my collection so he'd be giving in to the dark side. Lol.
But I would love it if I got some beauty-related items or even Sephora or MAC gift cards would be awesome. Sadly my birthday is just after Christmas, so most years I get a Xmas/Bday gift that's pretty wanky because everyone's broke =}

I'd love makeup as a gift... my big thing that I've decided if people can't figure anything out is "Just pick out some eyeshadows!" I won't tell them what I want, I want to see what they'd think I'd like. No right or wrong as I'll more or less use anything at some point. :]

Makeup is so personal to me, and I'm really picky, so I don't think I could have someone gift it to me... Unless they're shopping through a wish list. I am a sucker for holiday sets though, and they have some fantastic ones this year!

@ Lorena, I have the same problem, my b-day is Jan 1 so if I get a gift its usually a b-day/Xmas combo. I wouldn't mind getting makeup/beauty stuff as a gift coming from a wish list. But I'd feel guilty if they bought me something I couldn't use.

@Soma I can totally see how some would feel it's super personal to the point of preferring to purchase it themselves. Gift cards can be great in that situation!
I'm with many of you, I love to give and receive makeup as I'm sure you could tell in my initial post haha.

Makeup as a gift depends on the person who is getting the gift and who is giving the gift. As a mom with teenage daughters I buy makeup as gifts to my daughters primarily so they leave my stuff alone. For friends and other family members... if it's a nice gift set then I might get it if I knew the person was a makeup junkie.
For Christmas my daughters and I plan to give their closest friends little gift baskets with Fortune Cookies soaps along with various items from Lush and a few other deluxe sample items or mini items. For some of my closest friends I plan on giving Fortune Cookie soaps along with some bath bombs in fragrances that I know they like. One friend loves the smell of pumpkin and warm spices while another loves floral fragrances. It helps knowing what each likes.
Gift cards are fantastic but some people don't use them. A friend of my eldest daughters had four gift cards dating back to 2007 - one was a $25 gift card to Target, another a $50 gift card to Old Navy, the third was another $25 to the movies and the last was a $25 gift card to Olive Garden. $125 in gift cards she never used and doesn't plan on using despite going to those places frequently. So it can be a waste of money if the person doesn't use the gift card.

I personally don't love receiving random makeup as gifts. If it's something I've specifically asked for, I love it, or a Sephora gift card is always great. The reason behind the no random makeup - I have very pale skin so lots of eye shadows tend to look oranges, blushes too dark, etc. I'd just hate to not be able to use something somebody gave me.

@Kathleen I can see how it would be hard! You've gotta find some super makeup savvy friends to start exchanging gifts with so they know EXACTLY what to get you ;)
Personally, I love wish lists! But I do find that most people never go on them when buying for me haha. Personal preference overall I guess!

I would be super excited myself, but I would prefer a gift card to sephora or ulta even more. :)

@Candace I think we'd all probably unanimously agree with you that a Gift Card to a beauty store would NEVER be unwanted ;)

HECK YES! I absolutely love make-up. And luckily, my friends are quite aware of this. My secret santa bought me a MAC pigment. I was so flattered.

I love getting gifts that are cosmetic/beauty related! I love giving gifts as well that are beauty related as well, it makes it so much easier, and then I can just narrow it down to a specific product or need. = )
