I have been battling this (paper thin nails) for as long as I can remember. I ended up getting acrylic nails years ago (I think I was 13) because its so bad. I have stopped using acrylic about 2 years ago (when I was 27) and my nails are crazy thin. (They are so bad you can bend them just by lightly pressing on them.)
I have tried so many things to try to strengthen them and nothing has worked. I have tried a few different polishes, a few different lotions for your nails. EVERYTHING it seems. Plus polish does not stay on my nails. The polish peels within a day. Its horrible.
I want pretty, long, hard nails. I am so jealous of people that have this!!
Anyone have any suggestions? Maybe from someone who has had the same problem who now does not?!?
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have you ever brought it up to your doc? It may not seem medically related but I read that an Iron deficiency can contribute to thin nail beds (and being Iron deficient isn't all that rare in women). Maybe the fix is as easy as a supplement!

What they said. Talk to your doctor and get some blood work done to see if you have a deficiency of some sort. You could supplement your diet with OTC multi-vitamins. I take NatureMade Liquid Softgel Multi For Her with Iron & Calcium because I'm anemic and I'm lactose intolerant so I have to get extra calcium.

I agree with everyone's advice to you. It's likely to be diet related.
You can (safely) make your nails look a lot nicer by putting a little olive oil on them. This gives them a polish without weakening them, like harsher treatments do. The oil lets them breath. I use olive oil, but another vegetable oil would do.

I have actually mentioned it to my doctor before and they sold me some multi-vitamin pill. They didnt do blood work though. After a few days of taking the med I realized that something in it was giving me a crazy headache. I stopped using it. I have heard that pre-natal vitamin works wonders, but I dont know what ingredient in the other med gave me the headache. I know that I dont drink enough water, but I didnt think that was the reason. Maybe I am wrong.

Server Onychophagia (nail bitting) can actually impact the nail growth, damage to the matrix, cuticle and
hyponychium
Will also effect the way the natural nail will grow.
My tips for stronger nails.
Stop bitting!! ;)
Weekly cuticle push
Cuticle oil nightly (the magic happens during sleep)
A keratin rich hand and nail lotion (anything will sweet almond, jojoba, vit e, rice bran etc)
Nail strengthening polish (Sally Hansen, nutra nail preferably formaldehyde free as that over time can weaken the nail causing splitting, peeling and breakage)
Nail growth polish (qtica, opi, essie)
Garlic, olive oil and lemon juice are good natural remedies too.
And lastly, patience :) hope that advice helps

I have had exactly the same problem all my life too. I am extremely healthy in my diet, always have been mad take supplements to no avail. also had acrylics so I could have some chance of nice nails. I stopped at 33 when I had my little boy and trained in gelish, which also peels on my nails. opi strengthened them a little but by no means a cure and they still bend. I think we are stuck with it to be honest. I have no deficiencies in my diet. sorry I can't help but wanted to let you know you're not alone x

This may not help but a way to strengthen your nails is to finely chop up garlic and stick it into a clear nail strengthener! I do that and my nails have become much much stronger. Garlic is very good for your nails!

Acrylics are the worst fix for nice nail, over time they will cause the nail plate to separate from the nail bed. It can take months to repair and if the matrix was damaged during the acrylic process then that will also effect nail growth and the nail shape. Gels would be a better option, they are non porous so the natural nail will also be less supseptable to absorbing nasties that will weaken real nails.
