I'm graduating in May from highschool and after that im taking a gap year. I was wondering what kind of courses or schools are available to learn more about make up and get a certificate of some sort to be able to work at places like magazine shoots or runways? I'm really lost. :/

I went to Empire Academy of Makeup in Costa Mesa, CA and loved every minute of it. I relocated from Oregon to Costa Mesa just for the school and it was so worth it. The website is www.empireacademy.com. When I went there I took Intro to Makeup Artistry, Expert Artistry, Print, Runway, and Bridal Makeup and I also took the Airbrushing workshop, Hairstyling workshop, and Camouflage workshop. I got a certificate in every course I passed and had to confidence to go right into photoshoots from there. Hope this helps :)

wow that sounds amazing...... but is it affordableee i mean im not like super rich or anything. can you tell me more details please! like the price range and how many years you were there for and what kind of things you can do or are doing now! (:

yeah thats what i looked into at first, and i didnt know there were schools only for make up, and thats the thing im most interested. i can do nail stuff, i just learnt it all myself and i can basically do everything and im not so interested in waxing or hair stuff either, i really just want to focus on make up cause i love love love love looooove it! but thanks so much for your input, im glad your loving what youre doing! (:

I wish there were more MUArtistry schools in the NJ area! I cannot afford to pack up and move to New York or CA!! I wish I could! Anyone have any tips on starting a freelancing business?

If you ever want to work in a salon as a makeup artist you have to be a state board licensed esthetician as far as I know. The first week of the intro class is all skin care so you'll definitely learn a lot about it but you won't be licensed. As far as the price I'm not sure because I went a few years ago. I started intro in August of 2007 and was done with Print, Runway, and Bridal in March of 2008 I think. So not too long. I do know that they offer help with student loans though. Right after I was done with all my classes I was doing a lot of photoshoots and I absolutely loved it but most shoots were test shoots which means everyone is there for free just trying to get good pictures for a portfolio. Without a good portfolio no one has any reason to pay you for your work because they don't know if you're good. I was only working part time at Victoria's Secret so I couldn't pay all my bills and my parents didn't live down here so I had to go back to school, and that's what I'm doing now. So I haven't been shooting but I'm gonna try to start up on weekends again. It gets kind of expensive because you have to buy your own kit, but you don't have to use the really high end stuff, you can use drugstore stuff to start out with. umm, what else...oh, you also learn a lot about the business aspect of it like how to market yourself or start up your own wedding business, how to get a job at a makeup counter, how to book photoshoots, etc. Basically it's amazing and you get the opportunity you should definitely go. You can go to their website www.empireacademy.com and ask to take a tour and they can tell you more. Hope this was helpful :)

Victoria C. - you can build up a portfolio w/ tear sheets by doing TFP [trade for pics] with another up and coming photographer by working on shoots in your area via www.modelmayhem.com

Be careful though, there are lots of scammers that send you too-good-to-be-true offers. Make sure you double check that the photographer has a website or at least a portfolio of work to show you. Also, MM is a good site because you can actually message other models, MUAs, etc that have worked with them for a second opinion. If your work is awesome, the photogs will flock to you.  =D
