Angel Michele – There is no harm in being loyal to a brand especially when you have good reason for your loyalty. If a client tells me she is loyal to MAC because they have the best foundation she usually doesn’t know what she’s talking about. It’s usually that MAC was the first foundation – after trying Estee Lauder and Clinique – she found to match her skin tone. And that is a very narrow-minded outlook because there are foundation out there that are better quality with deeper shade ranges. But even this client wouldn’t bother me as much as others…all you have to do is fit her in another foundation that matches and problem solved. I’ve had clients who use Bare Escentuals tell me that when they blow their nose the loose powder comes out on their tissue. They’ve said that when they cough it comes up with their mucus but they will still only ever use it. How do you educate a person who is clearly this ridiculous? The product is clearly getting into your lungs and can be potentially doing damage to you, yet you’re still a loyalist? Annoyingly, these will be the same clients who claim to be purest and can only use “safe” makeup. This is the same ridiculous client who wants to make sure their makeup is paraben free. Despite the fact that parabens haven’t been proven to cause any damage and the original scare was with parabens in deodorant…which it’s still in most deodorants. But all of this is circling back to my original statement about public stupidness.
Jo-Jo – Isn’t it a stretch to call clients stupid?
Angel Michele – No. Like I said, there is ignorance which is a quick fix. But when a person swears by facts they have no proof about they are stupid. A smart person would never jump into a debate without researching what they are debating. Living in New York or any big city, you fail to get an actual sense of how ignorant and stupid most of America is. For example, I never realized how popular Bare Escentuals was until I began traveling outside of the metropolitan area.
Jo-Jo – I will say, because I happened to be one of the people who felt like this, your Dare to Bare video did show a side of you viewers had never seen before.
Angel Michele – (Laughs) I know right. Most often my videos are very straight forward. I give simple explanations and I’m done. In real life I’m very animated and brutally honest. I really don’t understand why anyone would have been shocked though. With Youtube, you never really “know” a person. Its cut, its edited, it’s artificial…it not real. I don’t claim to know Rihanna or Beyonce based on how they seem to portray themselves in the media…it’s kind of like the same thing.
Jo-Jo – So my final question for you is being a make-up artist and a makeup junkie, what are your top five essential products you have to have with you on a deserted island?
Angel Michele – (Laughs) Plenty of water, plenty of food, shelter, warm clothes, and hopefully a companion to talk to so I don’t go crazy. If anyone give any other reply to this question, they are already crazy.
