I've seen the clip in ones that you could try in the As Seen on TV section at Walmart. It might be a way to try it out w/o commitment.

Salons in my area (Northern CA) have them for as cheap as $3 per feather. For that price, I'd say it would be worth it! If you like the look, go for it. Just be sure to shop around for salons with the best price and prettiest feathers.

Yeah salons in my area ( SF bay area) They have them for 5$ a feather! I actually purchased some clip in ones a few months ago and all I can say is they look really cheap and don't look as cute as the actual feather extensions do! I say go to the salon and get those you will be much happier!

My favorite hair extension company - Doctored Locks - will not sell these because feather extensions are not cruelty-free.
There are three ways to get feathers from ornamental poultry. And keep in mind the birds needed for these feathers are ornamental birds not layers and not killed for their meat.
1. Kill the bird to strip it of it's feathers.
2. Pluck from a living bird which leaves a huge hole in it's skin.
3. Molting however molted feathers are typically damaged and not usable.

Think about this... In cosmetics you don't know for sure if the company tests on animals or not but wearing a feather extension you KNOW the bird was injured to make that feather extension. There's no way around it - the bird was either killed or live plucked to get your feather.

It is really cruel to animals but its already dead sadly but the birds have sufferd for us so you may awell use the ones that have been made and try to stop them making more and i was just looking for an alturnative instead of me dying my hair because i have skin problems which means i cant dye my hair alot :l

There are two ways to kill a bird - be it turkey, chicken, duck or some other type of fowl - either the bird is killed by hand (ax, twisting it's head off or suffocation) OR with a machine. Anyway you kill it the bird's heart continues to beat for a few minutes without it's head. Ever heard the term, "running around like a chicken without it's head"? It's very true.
In the commercial industry where thousands of chickens are processed in the day, and whose feathers are not used in fashion, the chickens are placed in these holders and their feet are held in place by these clamps. The bird is then taken through a machine that auto-decapitates the head. Some of the machines I've seen look like giant scissors. The chickens are held upside down to drain the blood, it can't flap around because it's in a holder, then dipped in hot wax and the feathers stripped. When it comes to ornamental birds their bodies are not dipped in hot wax after decapitation but are hand plucked. The ends with the blood are typically boiled to not only get rid of the mites but the blood in the nibs.
Still want those feathers?

not this discussion again...
If you want feathers get them. Don't let anybody's judgements change your mind.
I personally love the feather trend, I love animals too.
Just because you get feathers does NOT mean you don't care about animals... I think it is wrong for people to kill chickens for this trend, I also think it's wrong to breed them. I do believe that one person can make a huge difference, but for some reason, these beliefs don't keep me from loving this trend.
I wish they did, but they just don't.
But nobody has the right to pass judgement on me or anybody else. Opinions, sure.
I think you took it a little too far @Yasmin. I actually hope they get rid of this discussion because of your comment alone. I believe your a good person who cares a lot about animals, but I think their is a right and wrong way to handle situations, and that was just not right.

@Nykki B. - I'm for people knowing what they're buying. I've slaughtered my fair of chickens for food so I'm not one to be all PETA-like however slaughtering an animal for vanity sake is something I'm not into. If you disagree with my post on how a chicken or other fowl is killed that's your right to disagree.
I love my black eyeliner but it doesn't mean I'm going to stop wearing liner with Black #3 which is made from cattle bone. If someone wants to wear feathers that's their choice but they should be aware of how the feathers are obtained because many people won't buy into a stupid trend if they knew exactly how the feathers are harvested.

Why not false feathers?... it's not a must to get feathers from an animal, there are many places where you can get those extensions with fake feathers which look really good.
