Does your family understand?

Does your family understand your makeup addiction? My mother dosn't, I can sit there and talk about it sure, but she will have the most bored face in the world and if I ask her opinion she will just say "yeah". Its really frusterating to not have someone to talk to about it in real life. How about you guys?

Neither of my parents like it, they think it won't take me far in life and don't understand that I'm passionate about it!
My dad calls it "putting my face on" which bugs me a lot.

Kindof.... my guardians (great aunt and grandma) are kinda supportive about it...but they dont like that it's such an addiction and tht it costs so much...theyve threatened to cut me off multiple times...im surprised they havnt yet.... my dad used to be unsupportive about it..but i did makeup on his ex-gf and then he was sold..he thinks im really good and says i should go for what i love....then again he doesnt know just how much it costs...and always rolls his eyes when he sees how much i have or when i buy more, or when i do makeup looks for simple things like the beach and simple holiday family dinners....

Haha... my parents are completely for it! I remember when I finally learned how to do a decent job w/ it, they were happy I figured out how to look like a put-together lady.

Now, if I go see my dad w/o any makeup on my face, he asks me if I'm sick, lazy or if I had just rolled out of bed. He's also the same guy that told me I shouldn't wear knee high boots because it shortened my legs. When I asked him , "You're a guy, what the hell do you know about women's style?" - he responded:

"We men stare at you women all day, and you think WE don't have a clue abaout what looks good?" - haha, he can be a jackass sometimes, but I love my dad, regardless of his unwanted "fashion" advice.

My mom is into it, but she's had the same look for years. She's less inclined to try new things, but she does like it.

@ Julie D.: I call it putting my warpaint on! Hahah...  =P

@Mandy: You are so lucky, I wish I had that. My mom rarley even glances at my blog let alone comment on it. And if she does, its a joke or she's making fun of me. I just really wish I had someone to talk to about it. I used to have a friend, my best friend to talk to about beauty but she turned out to be not the nicest person.

I was always a tom boy in high school so I NEVER wore any type of make up. Now that I am all about make up and and more "girly" haha my mom is all for it! She has a ton of make up so we both share what we have. She is all about false lashes so I always get them from her. She buys the model 21 lashes bulk from Vietnam so I never have to worry about that haha. It's great because now we have a stronger mother daughter bond.

I'm so lucky... while my mom could care less about cosmetics I have Kristina H., (who is even more obsessed than I am) as a coworker AND FF (Forever Friend). I can't imagine spending three hours in Sephora with anyone else... *sighs*

Hah, my parents don't like me spending my money on it. They say I have enough makeup. My friends think I have tooo much too. I just don't have anyone to discuss it with :(

My parents are sort of on the fence. I got into makeup about 2 years ago and have been obsessed ever since. I don't think I'd make a full blown career with it like many others, but I do enjoy doing it for myself and others. When they found out how much I spend sometimes, they want to kill me. But they really can't say anything because I pay for it all. My mom an old-fashioned gal so she sticks to what she knows...the basics. She won't let me touch her face after some of the looks she's seen on me! lol.

@ Linda: Haha... YUP! The shop girls there had the laugh of their lives at his expense! [Poor guy...] - but at least I know he's willing to go halfway around the world for me and back. I <3 my dad... [and my lashes!]  =)

My mom is (she used to be a Mary Kay lady), my dad does not understand at all though. He does not get that it is my form of art and expression. He says "you don't need makeup, I don't see why you wear it"
To which I say, "I know I don't need it, I just like playing with it. Playing with colors and shapes is fun to me. "
This is normally followed by some other comment about how I look like a lizard or some other reptilian creature (he associates reptiles with bright colors apparently). He has even called me out in front of people at random places. I have learned to ignore it though.
As far as spending on it, I have my own job and will occasionally buy something, but not often enough that my parents say something. I am very very very frugal and will pinch a penny until it bleeds. I live in a small town so I don't have an Ulta or sophora, so with the exception of foundation and eye primer I buy just about everything from CVS. I get free stuff all the time it is amazing!!!!

oh boy oh boy, I feel ur pain. Everyone in my family do not have a clue they think i'm crazy for all the time effort and money i put in to make up. My dad calls me Jiggleypuff (from pokemon) and a friend calls me crayola. but who cares. I do have one friend but shes hardly around so its just me :/
its a lonely job being a makeupaddict lol. but hey, were all here at beautylish ^_^

Nope. But it's not for them to understand. It's my money I'm not spending and not theirs. It does get rather annoying to hear "Oh you need to open up a store and sell all of this!" or those type of comments. lol

Makeup is like any other hobby. Some people collect trains, stamps, coins, etc. It's no different. People need to get over it! Now, if you're spending all of your money on makeup and can't pay bills, support yourself, etc., then that's another story and perhaps your fam has a reason to not be supportive. Not saying that you're doing that....just put that in as an example! :)

As far as a career; now I am older than most of you (I bet), so I don't have the "family on my back" issue. I'd ignore them anyway! HA! My profession is in a different field than makeup. I only freelance from time to time and do makeup for friends/family as a favor. As the mother of a 13 year old daughter who has expressed an interest in the makeup industry; I tell her to go for it! However, she has to be able to have something to fall back on and she has to be able to support herself while pursuing her dream! That's the same advice I would give to anyone else.

my mom and dad don't understand it either. my mom thinks"i dont need anymore makeup" and they both think "im wasting my money" but it's something that makes me happy and it's my money im using anyways.

Oh my gosh I know, right?! My mum thinks I'm mad for spending so much. And she can hardly talk, she's a smoker! It's surely less productive to blow all your cash on cigarettes than makeup. I aspire to have a collection like xSparkage's whether she agrees or not :P I guess if you're asking your mum to buy things for you, that might agitate her a bit, but if you're spending all your own money, then there's no problem! And show her that you wear it a lot, so it's not going to waste :) x

Not really, my mom sells Mary Kay so she gets mad at me for buying other makeup products so I used to hide the makeup I bought from her but now she doesn't care as much as before and I have a bunch of non Mary Kay products but she still thinks it's a waste of my money and my dad doesn't get it at all, sometimes he'll buy me some but he doesn't get why I buy makeup and they both say 'don't you have enough' all the time! Same with my sister she doesn't get it either and she always steals my makeup

Ugh my mom always complains how I spend too much money on makeup when I could be spending it on things that are more important, and I have NO friends that share my love for makeup and hair! :( that's the worst part, all of my friends are boys/tomboyish and we can't give eachother makeovers or anything fun, I just want a girly friend hahah

Thats exactly how i feel about one of my cousins that so badly wants to keep in touch w/me thru texts & emails. I talk about my love for makeup & it bores her b/c she's not into makeup & uses super cheap makeup for teens (Lip Smackers), ugh!!

My mom thinks it's exuberant. She's the only one who knows how much of an addiction is. Now, she'll be the first one to admit I do my makeup just as well as the woman I paid $70 out of pocket for for prom last year, so at least when I spend that much I get to keep the products.

Honestly, I don't think my family understands my love for makeup. There have been countless times when siblings and other relatives have stated that I "wear too much makeup" when I'm only wearing something on my eyes. If ANYONE understands my passion for it, it'll have to be my fiance. He's the only one in my circle of friends that I can really talk to about makeup without it being, "you wear too much" or "I want to see the real you" kind of talk. My mom definitely doesn't understand it, especially when she sees me buying new makeup or new nail polish, or new anything that has to deal with beauty. It's hard, but you learn to either accept it or repress it.
