Alright, so I'm really interested in Cosmetology school. I'm a Freshman, so I'm not even close to graduating, but I was wondering, how in the world do you become a Makeup Artist? Like how does it work? Do you have to go to school for it, or do you have to get noticed or something? Because I would reallyy prefer to be a Makeup Artist, I just don't know how to get there. :)
Oh, and I was thinking of making makeup tutorials on Youtube, and see if I magically become a beauty guru. ;) Would that help me in any way?

I don't know which country your from, but going to a good makeup course could help. Also keep in mind that its a hard world and you have to work really hard to get noticed. Don't take every job you get asked for in the beginning. Search for good photographers to work with. Being a beauty guru on YouTube also takes time, but I'm sure it can help you a bit. Don't be shy and just ask photographers and models if you can work with them to get some experience. Good luck!

First off, I think Silke meant to say "Take every job you get asked" and not "Don't take". But otherwise I pretty much agree. School for makeup isn't necessary but it will look better when looking for jobs, plus no matter how good you might be, you will learn new things, things that you will really find good to know, especially with so many different skins (color, texture, etc) and shapes. Like she said, find a good photographer, and use some friends to model to build a portfolio (do subtle and adventurous looks). Also a good thing to do is make a deal with a photographer, hairstyles, etc. You recommend people to them and in return they recommend people to you. Promoting yourself is a very important thing. Also, have you considered what kind of makeup artist you want to be? There are so many kinds! And just remember, with being a makeup artist, unless you find a really great job (something like if you had a contract with WB movies, 20th Century Fox, etc) there is no retirement. And you never have a guarantee of jobs/income.

Hi Chelsey,
I couldn't agree with Brittany more. Most makeup artists I know, including myself are self taught - that's not to say that I don't continuously seek out knowledge, I just don't have any certification stating I'm a Makeup Artist. To add to what Brittany said there are many tools on the internet to learn - Beautylish, Youtube, Makeupalley...I also know that skillshare.com has a course from Make Up For Ever that is free.
You can also get your foot in the door by getting a part time job or summer job at a makeup store or makeup counter. Each line usually has their own training courses. If where you live has a Sephora they often times have the brands come in to give trainings (I did this for many years as a trainer at Sephora). Also keep practicing on yourself. Watch youtube videos or tutiorials on here and get to know your own face. It will be different learning other people's faces when you get started though so be prepared for that. And do just this - ask lots of questions on here, that's what we are here for :) Lastly when you feel you are ready to make it in the big world and do something like freelance, follow all of Brittany's advice. Just to add to it though, a good website to start networking is modelmayhem.com to find photographers and models in your area (in the beginning you will likely have to offer your services for free or TFP - trade for prints - to add to your portfolio).
Hope that helps! Good luck!

Oh, also, a perk to going to school is connections. Build relationships with your classmates and they could help you get jobs in the feature (and vise verse), and if your teacher thinks you are real good he/she might even invite you to help on work in the future.
