I'm having trouble finding people to practice on. I get plenty of people wanting me to do their makeup but can't get them to commit and I really need to practice before I star offering my services. Any suggestions??

Practicing on your own face is not going to cut it because so many can do that and just because you can apply it on yourself well does not qualify you as a makeup artist for all..It's the practice you need from different faces, eyes, skin, shape and so on the grasp of information in technique, application and so forth I'm pretty sure you get it.I suggest having a makeup party, something simple just have a group of friends over that are willing to help you build up your portfolio and are willing to be truthful about the makeup you have applied. This is something I did when I was starting out and still do on occasion just because friends of mine like martinis and having me do their makeup :-)

Alma I completely agree with you but I'm having trouble getting anY of my friends to commit. I Post it on facebook and I get so many people interested so then I send a follow up message to each person to schedule a day and Time but can't seem to get anything down.

Thank you at stephanie. I think applyin make up on urself is harder than aplying it on others. practice is practice better to practice on yourself than not at all x

Practice on yourself and family. You could also put out an ad that you are looking for models to build your professional portfolio. Tell them that not only will they be in your portfolio, but you'll give them a copy of the photos taken.

Look into helping out at schools for the theater dept and stuff like that. you can get tons of photos for your portfolio that way.

I strongly agree with Alma. Doing makeup on yourself and makeup on others it two totally different ballparks. I think the hardest struggle with applying makeup on others is not having complete control.
I'll have to disagree with Meena who says makeup on yourself is harder than makeup on others. When doing makeup on yourself, you are in control of how you move. You can tug on your eyelid to do liner or apply your false lashes with your fingers (my preferred method, but I have to use tweezers when I'm doing it with others which is HARD.) When doing makeup on someone else, they can blink or move their head at any given second and completely throw you off. And it's' a general rule not to touch the client's face with your actual hands which is so annoying.
Lastly, I really agree with Audra. Call around to your local middle and high schools and ask to speak with the drama department. Or you can usually find each individual's teachers emails on the school website. Tell them you are an up and coming makeup artist and would love to help out in the makeup if they have any upcoming productions. You'll get a lot of experience working with different skin colors and face structures. Whether you charge them is up to you (I wouldn't. Unless you are really really good.) Just ask for your name to be listed in the program, which could help you get a MAC pro card :-)
