Can you dye your hair a lighter color without bleaching?

Depends how light you want to go. I have naturally dark brown/black hair & I've box dyed it to a light brown before.

No. Sometimes if you use a box dye it turns out to okay and makes it a little bit lighter, but it won't look super great. :( If you want something dramatically lighter, bleach is almost your only option.
