This industry is growing more and more. How do you set apart from other muas hair stylist etc. How do you keep your clients coming back. I ask this because its a lot of us breaking in this industry and its overwhelming with all the competition.

Aside from having good skills, experience & education, clients will come back to caring, knowledgable, sympathetic MUA who puts customers first. Customer Service should be one of your top priorities as well as honesty. If you can do all that, clients will trust & like you enough to keep coming back, then they start referring their family, friends & acquaintances to you ;-)

What about incentives? Like punch cards or so much off your next visit for every referral you bring in.

Do a 10th visit half off! Refer 5 new people get a free visit! I hear alot of women getting discouraged. But if you do it for the love instead of trying to compete, you will be more sucessful! Everybody has something to add, dont give up on your dreams and have confidence! Compete with you only! And dont get discouraged! You gotta stick it out! As long as you dont give up you will succeed regardless of the growing industry!

I stand out because I do skin care services as well as make up. I now also just started doing eye lash extensions. There are many courses out there for certified make up artists and since it's trending HUGE right now it definitely would boost business.

I think finding a niche or something that is your signature can help. when I started out I didn't have that. I have now focused on cruelty free beauty so I only use products that have not been tested on animals. this works well for where I happen to live/work because most of my clients are animal lovers and this is important to them, but you have to find whatever niche works for you and be really good/knowledgeable at that. and I agree with others above being really personable and great customer service is important. for example I go to my hair dresser because she does a great job on my hair, but I also really like talking to her and it adds to an overall positive experience which keeps me coming back

ok another question is how do u deal with new challenges like when a person wants to change their whole look after you done it or trying new things like I prefer strips but the job offer I Gt wants both strips n individuals?
Nov 13, 2012
Dania M.
Avoid that by doing consultations/trials where the client gives you ideas of what she wants and has the option to change and say what she likes better or try this... maybe that etc.
Its very beneficial for the clients but its an extra cost - time and product = money.
If you dont want to do trials simply contact her with a dense portfolio. Let her pick choose and refuse, and let her know the flexibility (or lack of it) of her choice.
This is why I LOVEEE face charts and photos of eye makeup. You can document every look you want with the products used and where (categorize by eye shapes). If the client wants to replicate or put a twist on a look, she can select it. That way you can give her what SHE CHOOSES - now she not satisfied with YOUR work per-say, she just didn't like her selection.

If you are good, the money will come. Set high standards and new goals to work towards. Education is the most important investment you can make. Take classes and continue to grow. Also, find a mentor that you really look up to!

I agree with all of the above! But one thing that I know my clients say about me to my face & behind my back is that I listen. They feel heard. Listen to what they say. Repeat it back to them. Give suggestions but also on a first appointment don't push them out of their comfort zones. BUT you can make suggestions of ideas you might have . And if you gain their trust, make them feel comfortable , do what they want the first time really , really well. They'll come back.
And! Be authentic . Be yourself. Be down to earth and not scattered. Don't prattle on about nothing while you work on them. I've had clients tell me they left other stylists for that. And! Take classes. Always. Like she ^ said. And when your clients ask you what's new you have something to talk about regarding your profession ,& it shows passion & enthusiasm ;)
