Hi Alison, I used to have great skin when I was a teenager and about 2 years ago when I was 26 I started getting spots which I ignored at the start but it only got worse. I tried everything from home remedies to really expensive acne treatment gels. Finally, I went to the GP and got it looked at and she prescribed antibiotics (Minocyn) for a few months and now its all cleared out and I have smooth skin :-) The acne did leave scars but hey, there's nothing a really good concealer and foundation can't cover up and now I've been spot free for over a year and a half! Also, I'm extra careful with my skin routine now, especially when it comes to taking it all off at night! I use Johnson's wipes first to take it off and then cleanse with Body Shop's Aloe cleanser and toner. I exfoliate with MAC's volcanic ash exfoliator once or twice a week and wash my face clear of everything with the seaweed facial wash by body shop. I use the No.7 blemish defense serum after this and body shop's seaweed night cream. Hope this helps.

Ealu I hope you'll see this. Have you tried bio oil for your scars? My friend get rid of it with bio oil :)

I agree with sarah^, bio oil works wonders for scarring. Also, I had a bad breakout that lead to a skin infection and I went to the doctor after a month of the worst acne I'd ever experienced, they gave me antibiotics and an anti-fungal cream to get rid of it and was gone in 3 days. Would highly suggest asking your doctor for a similar treatment. :)

I used dry soap every morning washing my face and every week made a home mask with tomato or lemon but if your skin starts to irritate remove it immediatly and instead of these use an egg :)

I went to the dermatologist for mine and she gave me epiduo and Acanya. They seem like they are working good. You have to go to the doctor and get them prescribed I think.

Don't touch that Bio Oil. It contains mineral oil and if you're trying to control active acne breakout I would not use that oil because it could possibly make your situation worse. And don't apply the spot treatments all over your face. Its meant to be used on the spot itself. What keeps my acne under control is watching what I put in my mouth. Without boring you with the long details I basically consume a lot of veggies/fruit, drink a lot of water and dairy products is nonexistent in my diet. It cleared up my skin big time once I switched my diet. For the hormonal breakouts I would get around that time of the month...flaxseed oil tablets. Works like a dream for me. For an occasionally spot I'll apply a spot treatment at night (Mario Badsecu Drying Lotion) and for day Mario Badsecu Drying Cream to be applied under my foundation or bb cream.

Dudu Osan African Black Soap and water. I only use the soap when the acne starts to pop up and it's gone within a day or two.

The sun. Go tanning, it is honestly the best.
But when it comes to acne, you wanna use benzoyl peroxide. It's by far the most researched and most effective product for acne. Find a cleanser and moisturizer with that ingredient and you'll be golden! Make sure to keep your routine steady by washing your face in the morning and at night. Also, avoid oil based makeup as it may clog more pores and create more pimples or irritate your acne that you already have. Keep your hair clean and out of your face as well, my little brother and his bieber hair was breaking out so he got it cut and his skin is so clear now, I'm pretty jealous :) also make sure to drink a lot of water, it helped me with basically all my skin problems

Brittany...tanning in hopes of resolving acne only causes the skin to rebound to cause more acne. I use to do the same thing when I was young and not knowing any better. It resulted in more acne and rough textured skin. Later on I learned from dermos just how bad it is. Its not worth having premature aging to get rid of acne. I'm 39 years old now and I've tried all the lil tricks that everyone is trying now and let me tell you...all of them will come back to haunt you when you're older.

Tanning is something the body needs naturally, vitamin d will clear your skin up and help out with any problems essentially.
Dermatologists bash tanning because they can't sell it, but what do they sell for acne? UVA treatments. It's the same thing but less healthy, trust me when I say I've been studying the sun, and it's effects on the body since I was like 11. I've contacted multiple dermatologists and health boards and they all come back with the same crap.

Brittany...that's cool you do research but I live with a licensed medical doctor who is a cosmetic/skincare chemist he is fair skinned and he used to sun himself as a teenager in hopes of getting rid of his acne. He's 33 years old now and is dealing with the consequences of it. His skin feels like leather and he has sun spots galore. Didn't kill off his acne...he's still dealing with it. I don't know what dermos you've spoken to but the one's I know bash tanning because they are the one's having to reverse the years of damage with lasers and acids. And UVA treatments...my husband doesn't condone it or the dermo that I go to myself doesn't even promote it at her practice. To clear acne the healthy way is via diet and using the appropriate skincare products. Vitamin d isn't the only cure all and too much of it can be more destructive than good.

It's the drying of the skin that often helps with acne. Tanning/ getting a sunburn will help, but that does lead to further skin damage. Acne medicine dries out your skin to rid of acne without the damaging effects of the sun. I'm totally with Lynnie, Acanya works wonders! I use Acanya, Atryla and an antibiotic pill, all prescribed and I don't have break outs. I do still have scarring that I'm working on, Shelley if you know how to rid of acne scars that'd be wonderful! But I absolutely agree, a healthy diet and plenty of fluids is also key. Totally makes sense too, you're skin is made up of nutrients you put in, so if you have an unhealthy diet your skin will reflect that. And always staying hydrated! Especially with these acne medicines that dry out your skin!

The sun will always help, you can't say the thing our body needs to survive is some sort of horrible thing. I'm not telling her to over expose herself and tan everyday, but in today's SPF dependent society it does more good than harm to get out in the sun for a bit. With what's in today's skin care products and makeup I can only imagine how long it's been since her face has seen the sun. I'm not telling her to go out and tan everyday, but tanning is always good if done responsibly. Not to mention back then sunburn was considered an essential to tan, and beds were mostly high intensity. A low intensity bed which radiates UVA and UVB will help a lot.

Brittany don't say that to a skin cancer survivor...I volunteer at the Mayo Clinic in my city where folks go in for chemo treatment and every single skin cancer patient I've come across said they tanned responsibly too and there they sit getting chemo for a skin cancer that invaded bone tissue and having chunks of flesh removed. Its a very sad position to be in since we're such a beauty obsessed society. I'm of a darker complexion and I met ladies darker than me affected by it. No one is immuned from it and I'd rather slap on sunscreen than deal with what those patients are fighting. And tanning beds are much worse than outdoor sunlight. :(

The sun is absolutely important. The body needs up to 30 minutes of sun exposure 2 times a week to get the adequate amount of vitamin D it needs. Depending on where you live, now that winter is approaching and the sun is less intense and it can be harder to get it, I live in Texas and a cold front came in so you won't be catching me outside for very long. But a good multivitamin makes up for this! A healthy diet, plenty of water, and exercise will keep you and your skin healthy and will reduce the acne!

@Katie J. What I used to get rid of my acne scars (and it actually keeps future acne from popping up) us glycolic acid at 17%. I started at 10% and then moved up to my current percentage of 17%. Used only at night topped off with a non-active moisturizer. I absolutely love that stuff. With constant use it took me about 6-8 weeks to see a major difference. And after 6 months the use of full coverage foundation wasn't needed. Since glycolic acid is an exfoliant you will have no reason to reach for a manual facial scrub. With that it will also keep your pores clear as well. So if you have enlarged pores this will be very beneficial. Also you can pump up the fading process by using a non-drying vitamin c mask. I use one from Renee Rouleau that I love.

@shelley my mom had skin cancer. Though I'm not sure what I could've said in that sentence to offend you. If you look into the statistics most melanoma victims were from medical use. I don't understand why you're arguing, the sun doesn't kill us. The sun is what creates life and allows us to survive on this planet , and I would rather be in the sun than put a cream
full of zinc oxide and hormone restrictors on my skin.. I think unless it's absolutely necessary that stuff shouldn't be so depended on. I'm still not sure why you're arguing with me though, I'm not telling her to go out every day, my apologies if you've experienced a bad result but you can not put the blame on the sun, when half the things in our world are cancerous.
