To all of my well established MUA's how long did it take you to build a nice size kit?

Agreed, I'm constantly trying and swapping out products in my kit. As your business grows you'll be able to afford more quality products for you kit and expand color selections and textures.
I started my kit entirely on Coastal Scents and BH palettes, Sigma +Elf brushes (some of which I still use) the drugstore is stepping up and you can get some great products their that work well professionally. Also I really recommend attending IMATS or the makeup show, you can get great deals on brands like occ or INGLOT.
That's just how I started my kit.. You should also remember that you don't need every product out there. If you're going into bridal focus on products that are more natural tones and last longer. For fashion, play with more pigmented and vivid colors etc.
as a MUA it's quality not quantity :)

I agree that it is an ongoing process, continually editing the kit. The longer you work, the smaller your kit will get. So a small kit isn't a bad thing, depending on what products you have. It's better for it to take longer and actually save your money for things you'll use up. Nothing goes in my kit unless it meets my qualifications. It has to be/have a) the highest quality, b) up to professional standards, c) a high pigment load, d) multi-functionality, e) staying power, f) usable for different types of jobs. For example, foundation that can be used on different skin types and can also be used as a concealer or mixed well with correctors. Think through what you already have and ask yourself if the product will play well with what you already have.
