Wow no answers?? I guess what I'm really trying to ask is if it is required to have a license to be a freelance Mua in NY... I've looked all over the web but I can't seem to find a straight answer...

I dont think you are required to have license for mua, just for hair and skincare in general. But not makeup

I contacted the state and was informed that in fact makeup artists do need either a cosmetology or esthetician license in order to work legally in NY. Per NY state anyone applying product on an individuals face (appearance enhancement with lotions, cosmetics, eyelashes, etc) MUST be a licensed esthetician or cosmetologist in order to be paid/compensated in the makeup artistry profession. I was always under the assumption working with a certificate from a makeup school would be ok but they reiterated several times that a certificate is not valid to work as a paid makeup artist and if caught there are fines to pay and can lead to them shutting one's business down.

Jackie where in NY are you? NYC or Westchester? I ask because CT does not require a license. I have NY clients who just hop over the border to come to my studio because I live in Southern ffld county. so not sure if you planned to work out of a location or travel etc. here is the exact language I got from state of CT: Pursuant to Section 20-250(4),  Connecticut General Statutes, no Connecticut license is required of individuals performing facials, applying cosmetics, performing pedicures, eyebrow arching, shampooing, manicures, or braiding. There is no licensure or certification offered or required for nail technicians or estheticians in Connecticut.

Thanks! that's what I thought but LBs post made me nervous. I work in CT primarily so I know I'm fine, but due to my close proximity to NY I have done a couple things in Westchester NY so I thought it was strange thanks for the link!
