I would start small:) go for your second. At Clair's I believe it was free for the pierced and the prices ranged from $25 up on the earrings you must buy from them for the piercing.

I agree to go to a piercer if you are getting your rook or tragus done. I have both but to be honest I never thought to go to the mall to get them done as they are not your normal type of ear piercing and would need extra care.

Only go to the mall for second holes..if you want your tragus or rook pierced please go see a piercer...most people won't use a gun to do it cuz your cartilge (sp) could collapse (sorry for the scare)...good luck...I have my conch and it hurt but everyone has a different pain tolerance.

Don't get pierced at the mall, period. The guns they use can't be fully sterilized, and you run the risk of serious infection. Not to mention, the clerks who do the piercings aren't trained in placement, are using low quality jewelry (prone to reactions) and again, are using guns. You risk infection, scarring, crooked earrings, lopsided piercings, and a whole lot of disappointment. Just save up your money and go to a professional piercer.

I definitely agree, do not get pierced at the mall. I had two holes in my cartilage done at Claire's and they were awful. I had my tragus done professionally and the difference was night and day. The cartilage piercings were placed too close together and were always infected when I first got them even though I took care of them. Even after they healed they didn't really feel good and weren't comfortable. My tragus piercings (I got both ears done the same day) healed wonderfully and they are the only piercing I've kept. I always forget I have them pierced because they are very comfortable and don't cause me any trouble. Definitely go to a professional piercer. I'm actually not even sure if the people at the mall will be allowed to pierce anything other than your lobes anyway. I'm not 100% sure on that but I'd say that would be the case with a place like Claire's or a kiosk. Also, the tragus and rook are pretty thick areas to pierce. I doubt a kiosk or Claire's is going to have the proper equipment to do such a piercing. A professional piercer will need to use a needle, not a gun, to pierce those areas.
As far as pain, my tragus didn't hurt as bad as everyone said it would. It's mostly just a lot of pressure and then the usual pinch and burn but a bit more intense. But of course everyone's pain threshold is different.

The difference between a pro piercer and a claires hourly sales person is their education and quality of tools. pro peircers have to be certified or licensed by the state, have a deep understanding of blood born pathogens and how to sterilize (which is very different from sanitizing!). the people at claires go to a one day seminar and take a short test and are handed an attendance award.
pros use hollow needles that remove tissue which helps give the skin room to swell and heal cleanly. guns punch a blunt object through skin, which cuts off blood supply to some bits- the leading cause of infections come from dead skin being in the wound.

I thought Clair's was only a lot to do basic ear piercing. That's what they told me.
BUT I've gotten my tragus piercing 6x (I Leo letting it close) and it's never hurt even with scarring and what not, no pain.
But I wouldn't go to a mall :/ also I paid 5-7 each time for mine.
But I live in NYC so I don't know..
