I am getting my hair cut today and I want a trim and like have it layered but not really layered... Just where my hair isn't all the same length and some is like a half inch to an inch shorter than the rest but not a significant difference. How do I say what I want?

Tell them like that.

If they don't understand you verbally, try to find a picture of the hair that you want so that they can visually see what it is that you want.

Always have a picture of what hairstyles you don't want as well. That will give them a better guideline.

Tell your hair dresser that you would like layers in your hair. But the layers your wanting are long layers. The layers you aren't wanting are called uniform layers. Just ask for long layers.  :)

Sarah, I will be going to my hair dresser that I have been going to for years so communication shouldn't be a problem! :-)
