Okay so I need help. I really want to be a makeup artist. I do find that it's hard to get started. First off, I only get to work on myself. It seems that most people around me just aren't into makeup. I get lots of compliments on my makeup but my confidence is pretty low to try it on a complete stranger (seeing that the people closest to me won't let me work on them). I just don't want to mess up on someone. I was thinking of applying at a makeup counter. My only problem there is I hate sales goals. I find it hard to sell products to people if I don't believe in it/believe it's worth the price. Does anyone have any advice?

I totally get what you're saying. My nerves kick in at the thought of working on someone else. But if you're good (which I assume you are XD), just remember that. I'm trying to build a portfolio of my best work on myself for now. Until I can get some people to work on too. Maybe find someone who wont mind being a model for a few hours, even if they don't really care for makeup.

Thanks everyone!

I think the best way is just to have a makeup party with some of your friends. Do their make up, take some pictures you can put on an online portfolio. It will be great for you to practice on other people with no pressure and you can get some great shots in. The best way is probably to do some face charts and then try to recreate them on one of your friends that way you can show the concept as well as the execution. :) This will hopefully ease your nerves!

I think it would be a really cool idea to find some local mua in your area and contact them. I'm actually in the same boat as you and decided to contact this really impressive mua in my area to see if she was maybe looking for an intern. She was a little leery but I informed her I was willing to work just for the experience and networking alone and she agreed! I'm sure some mua needs someone to clean brushes, handle their schedule, online network for them, etc. The more you learn the more your confidence will grow and people will trust in your abilities more. You'll be itching to paint some faces!

You should look up online to see if there are makeup workshops or classes in your area. i'm not sure if there are makeup schools in florida, there's some in cali, but you should definately look into it.

In my area there are only cosmetology courses. Not sure what to do about that now. Thanks everyone for your input. I'll keep it in mind.

If you believe in the products you sell, you can sell anything! If you don't like a particular product, don't recommend it. Your customers will appreciate your honesty, and build a personal relationship to trust you. They'll keep coming back to buy more from you if you stay honest to yourself and the people around you. =]

Counters would be the best place to get practice... And if you can do it, go for it! =]

I was like u for years and then I started watching tutorials and reading books and just really got more and more into it and just started on myself everyday a different look , a different technique and ppl started to compliment me more and more and then my friends began asking me to do a little here and there before we went out so I recommend starting there and I also asked ppl that were not maybe a good friend and yes u can make a mistake but the worst that happens is they have to wash it off so I say if its a passion keep at it and dont give up and u r ur best model u will ever have
