What is Lolita? I've heard it a lot recently and have no idea what it means... Help!

Lolita was the main character in a novel from the 50's that was immortalized in film by Stanley Kubrick in the early 60's. The main character is very young, seductress who manipulates a much older man for personal gain. The term has come to mean a teen/pre-legal age female who is an overtly sexual temptress who isn't afraid to go after what she wants... at any cost. Sometimes it's used in a complimentary fashion when a young girl pulls off a vampy or pin up style look. For some peeps, it just means a "hot" young, confident girl. Not quite it's original intention, but words always have a way of evolving. The book and film are both excellent.

But also, Lolita is a style related to Harajuku out of Japan. Its most often associated with Gothic lolita, where girls dress in very luxurious, doll-like clothes. Mary jane shoes, bell-skirt dresses covered in ribbons and lace, corsets, etc.

Megan, I was just thinking about that. Many people use it for Cosplay..and role play. It's founded in the same vein;. A young girl appearance that is sexy to a point where it is intentionally extreme. Lots of ribbons and stockings, corsets, as you said. Some of the clothing is fanTAStic!

I know, some dresses are so fab, but the style is very expensive 😩

I know! They are insanely priced, but some are so well made with not a single detail overlooked. I've seen a few outfits at Comic-con that were on par with what you'd expect from a costume in an award-winning film.
Adore the gothic lolita. Love all that dark lace and ribbons.
