I am sure that there are tons of threads on this topic already lol but I was wondering if anyone has dreams of also becoming a makeup artist or if you're already pursuing that dream (or if you're successful lol), what steps did you take to achieve what you wanted? I'm unsure if I want to attend cosmetology school but it is a strong possibility. Any suggestions?

I want to be a makeup artist I'm not sure where to start, I know you can get fully trained and qualified but that's expensive :( some artists are self taught

I don't believe you have to pay someone to learn the artistry of makeup... there are so many resources out here such as YouTube, blogs, websites, and etc.and the key to makeup is practice practice practice!!

I'm a self-taught MUA however I learn a lot from weekly makeup sessions with my friend who does makeup on a professional level.

I have dreams of becoming a MUA and I know with God, we can make it!!

Being trained is pretty expensive and everyone doesn't have that kind of money. Thank you for your input Dominique! I've run across a few MUA on instagram who are self taught and their work is amazing. I didn't even consider having a career as a MUA up until recently. I'm pursuing my Fashion Merchandising degree but I feel that I'd be able to merge the two somehow.

I went to cosmetology school and we only even touched on makeup for a day and it was basics. I now manage a cosmetics counter and have learned more and gotten more experience this way. and this job also gives me a foot in the door to persue my dreams.

I am currently in school studying cosmetology and esthiology at Aveda. I really think you should look into it and see if there is an institute in your area. They really do their best to make school affordable, and they also offer Mac Pro Makeup Mastery courses for like $10 a month once you begin school!

Or do something like Jamie is! Macy's is a great place for on the job training and I believe some of them will even train you to certification. That's how I got into all this fun stuff (:

Thanks Jamie, I heard that some cosmetology schools really don't focus on makeup that much and that's what I'm really interested in. Sure, I could learn how to style hair but that wouldn't satisfy me as much as being a skilled MUA. I'm going to try to look into applying to different makeup counters.

Stormi, there is an Aveda here in Atlanta and I was thinking about scheduling a tour with them to get a feel of the school. I'm going to do as much research as possible this summer lol. Thanks your input!

Kirstyn I wish that I was as passionate as you at such a young age. Believe me, I wish I would have figured this out at 18 but better late than never. It's great to see people following their dreams and being happy about it.

I'm 19 and a professional makeup artist. I do it for a living and went to a professional school straight out of high school. It's called Cosmix school if Makeup Artistry in Fort Lauderdale Florida. It took me 3 months and a lot of money but its worth it for me!!

That's great! Make sure you make it clear to them that you are more interested in becoming a makeup artist, and ask about the Mac Pro kit and courses. I'm pretty sure all of them offer it, and you can also ask about previous students and their success. That's what made me choose Aveda. Good luck!

Someone told me that a freelance makeup school would teach you more than Mac pro classes. so search freelance makeup schools =] good luck! I'll be going to Bellus Academy for skin and makeup hopefully in July, I'm excited

@Stormi Thank you so much. I really do appreciate it. I'll be sure to let them know when I go in for my tour.
@Kaitlyn Oh that makes sense too! I never thought about doing a search for freelance makeup schools. I wish the best of luck to you on your journey :). It's funny because I knew that I wanted to be a fashion stylist for sure and now makeup has come into the picture. Thank you for your input :)

I wish we had an aveda school around here. learning what I did in school was great and I loved it, buy hair and estetics aren't my passion like makeup, so I changed my path and I love it. ill get certification after 6 months too, which will be amazing! good luck on your search. just remember to look and look until you find the best option for you!

I agree with Jacqueline!! makeup is much more than packing colors on your eye. its actually an art that can be represented in a pleathora of ways. Also, if you ask any self-taught MUA, they will tell you the struggles of learning makeup and getting established. We are here to support you!!

I plan on attending Cinema Makeup School in Southern California in a couple years. I'm currently finishing a BS in Business Administration and Small Business Management (double concentration) so that I will have skills to represent myself as a professional and have something to fall back on just in case. I really want to go into special effects, and since there are lots of chemicals and such involved I feel that a formal education is the best and safest way to get started. :)

Thanks hon! I can't wait to get started there. :)
