I'm not totally new to makeup, but when it comes to eyeshadow, I just feel like I can't do it, everything comes out wrong and it looks like some 5 year old has done it. Any tips on how to get started?

Make sure you know where your crease is. Most caucasian people have a deep defined crease naturally. Use good brushes to blend the colours out- not too much, it'll look muddy and messy. Too little blending and it'll look odd. There are lots of youtube vids to see how to do basic brown eyeshadow. Try those and avoid colour or smokey eyes until later. :)

Try looking at tutorials and practicing. I started by watching Marlena on WWW.MakeupGeek.com - I watched her basic tutorials and practiced, then moved up to more complicated looks from there.
