My hair is completely dead. I've been swimming for over 10 years and it's left my hair super dry and damaged. Whenever I brush my hair, small pieces break off. It's gotten so bad that pieces of my hair will fall off! I've been getting my hair trimmed. I've tried every special shampoo and conditioner, hair oil, and homemade hair mask. Nothing seems to be working. Any ideas or suggestions?

Hey rose! So I've been a swimmer my whole life and I recently got my lifeguarding and for my dry chlorinated hair my hairdresser recommended me to use neutrogena anti residue shampoo once a week it looks like this:

It will get rid of all the chlorine in your hair and help it become healthier but because of the damage all ready occurred your hair probably isn't going to go back to normal until it grows out:/ but this shampoo will help! As well try coconut oil hair mask! Buy virgin coconut oil and put it in your hair for 30 min and wash out with regular shampoo, this will put some fatty acids back into your hair!

Pureology Hydra whip and Aveeda Damage Remedy Mask (sleep in the mask in a shower cap or plastic wrap ) on hair damp, not wet. Then rinse out, no shampoo. If you don't have a "Wet Brush", I'd definitely get ine, avoid heat, even using cooler water to rinse hair. Shampoo, Pureology has a hydrating formula. I'd also consult a stylist since a hair gloss will smooth the cuticle and bring shine without drying hair. Saved my hair. I'd also amp up my Omega 3, D, Iron and Zinc in my diet. Best of luck to you.

Try a clarifying treatment at your salon. this will help to remove the chlorine in your hair. if you are still swimming, try wetting your hair with tap water. it helps to repel chlorine. also, wash your hair immediately after you get out of the water with a clarifying shampoo. I really like Avedas sun care shampoo. also as rozberry said, aveda damage remedy mask and pureology hydrate shampoo and conditioner. I sell both at my salon and they are phenomenal products.

Do you wear the cap that swimmers use?

Definitely try coconut oil. It may be at the point where you have to cut a few inches off. My hair was so damaged from sunshine and chlorine and saltwater that I had to chop off about a foot of it. It's such a sad thing to do but your hair will be so much healthier in a few months that way.

You might wanna do the coconut oil first and this is just to know for next time when its not as damaged as you said? Or try a small section of your hair to test it first

I would use Paul Mitchell shampoo 3. it's a super clarifying shampoo & I always use it on clients with a heavy amount of product in hair / swam in chlorine, then a really good conditioning masque at least once a week
