If you use purple dye over your hair as it is now it won't be mega purple, it'll just tint your hair. For my hair I had to bleach it basically white to get the purple to look as vibrant as it is; pastel purple would be the same, your hair would have to be basically white to get the color to show.

I was thinking a more deep purple, nothing too bright. My issue is: I've had my hair an intense red before so I know all about bleeding etc, but is purple as staining and fast fading?

The first couple times I washed my hair it stained my towels a little. I've had my purple for about 3 months now and really haven't experienced any fading but I've taken great care to make sure the color didn't fade.

Alexis, what dye do you use? Because as happy as I am with the purple color, it fades so quickly I find myself applying tiny amounts of the pigment after every wash. :/ how do you take care of it? I already use sulfate-free shampoo and color-protect masks.
the layer of pink I have underneath, on the other hand, as bright and intense as the first day with no touch ups.
Here's a picture of my hair color

I got my hair done at a salon and they used Prevana (sp?) dye. I use the Bumble & Bumble Color Minded Shampoo and Overtone Extreme Purple Daily Conditioner. I wash my hair once or twice a week with cold water (:

I've dyed my hair way more than a few times lol although now it's virgin again after my hair cut.
Out of blue, green, teal, purple, lavender, pink, and silver lol - purple was the color I had that faded the least and lasted the longest. It did bleed a little at first after dying it but all colors are bound to bleed at first.
I have very curly/coily hair so I didn't want to over bleach and ruin my natural curls completely.
I used 30 volume Creme developer and blue bleaching powder. I have VERY porous hair naturally - which means that my hair can release and take in color easier than someone with normal or low porosity hair. That helps a lot in knowing how long you can get away with keeping bleach on your hair. That being said - I didn't need it in for too long. I wrapped it in foil too to speed it up. Me using the blue bleach helped in eliminating yellow undertones so I did NOT need to do a second bleach (my hair was virginhair black/brown btw when I did this). After the bleach I used ION toner to help get out whatever tones were left that were brassy.
I used color jamz purple passion (I think it's called) from Sally's. it's a deep but VERY vibrant purple. It's dark but gorgeous lol and turned a certain way it's blue undertones make it look like a neon blue/purple. Anyway it lasted 3 months without me touching it up until I just cut it off.
- You may not have to bleach it white to get that deep purple, but brassy tones will need to be eliminated. You will need to at least be blonde. Toning can help the rest.
- Your color will bleed at first. Cool water and conditioner made for colortreated hair can help with that.
- I think it depends on the dye you use and your aftercare on how the color fades.
I hope this helps :)

Thanks Alexis and Chelle!
I also had it done professionally, I just re-do the color at home since its natural pigment and no developers are needed.
I know about the cold water, but I can't bring myself to do it... My appartment is too cold Hahaha
I will look into that conditioner. As I understand from the name, it has color in it?
Also, I wanted to ask, regarding the porosity of the hair, wouldn't it have the same effect on either color? How come just the purple seems to be released as easily?
The weird thing is, its not like the color is shifting to a lighter color or anything, but it starts showing the bleached blond...

Mar, even just lukewarm water will help with fading over warm/hot water! Yes, I believe the Overtone conditioner does have some color pigment in it (:

Great tips ladies!! Personally, I wanna see if I can avoid bleach. I have very very fine hair and dying seems to be the most it can take. My hair stylist is always amazed at how long it takes for my hair to grow and how great my color always looks. I know red is hard in the upkeep but I've yet to have a problem. With purple, I've read some reviews that leave me questioning it.

If you use Ion color Brights you just need to bleach your hair to a level 7
