I would like to know if one can get a tan under an umbrella coz I don't want one

An umbrella should keep the sun away and still provide the shade. You'll be fine :)

You will get a tan if the umbrella doesn't completely cover your entire body in shade 100% of the time you are under it - since the sun changes positions throughout the day you will probably have to move your seat to stay in the shade / as long as you do that you should be fine but either way you should still wear SPF regardless and as long you wear something above 15 then it shouldn't be easy to get a tan.

I don't think so but keep in mind that objects around you can actually reflect the Suns rays onto you. Light sort of scatters.
Which is why people can still be exposed to I believe... UVA rays even indoors by a window.
Although, I think UVA rays are the ones that cause skin damage/aging.
Anyway, just be sure to wear a sunscreen regardless,
Get one with physical sunscreens which actually prevent getting a tan rather than one that has chemical sunscreens which only filter the UV rays rather than blocks/reflects them from your skin.
It should contain titanium dioxide and/or zinc oxide.
If you're not sure then grab a sunscreen made for babies. They're usually made with titanium dioxide and/or zinc oxide since they are good for sensitive skin

You can't really get hit with the UV rays when indoors. It's the heat that comes with the light that can still cause burns and stuff while indoors. It's like when your under a lamp. But Aurora is right about the light scattering. You do need to still wear sunscreen because even though the sun light won't be hitting you directly, it could still give the same effect as if you were in an oven or something if it's hot out.
