Are tattoos stylish?

Obviously it's a huge trend these days for 20somethings to cover themselves in (often similar) tattoos. A few years ago it was rare to see a 20 year old girl with a full sleeve of tattoos and now I'm basically a minority for not having an excessive amount of tattoos. So are you liking this trend, are you apart of it? Is it something many are going to regret later in life?

I'm a die hard fan of tattoos. I don't have any yet but I have quite a few planned. They're not something I'm going to regret because they're things that mean something to me or things I've loved since I was little. I don't consider tattoos themselves to be a "trend". Tattooing existed long before people started getting tattoos just for the hell of it, it was just a more taboo thing to have tattoos. Since it's much more accepted in today's society more people have tattoos and I love it. If anything is a "trend" about tattoos it's the styles. Like a few years ago a ton of people wanted tribal tattoos and now not as many people are getting them. I'd never get a tattoo in a certain style just because that's the most popular style at the time, I'll get my tattoos in the style I want them and I think that's how it should be.

I honestly don't think it's a trend people are just noe willing to express themselves without caring what anyone has to say. I don't have any but plan to get a thigh tattoo.

Well at least where I live - it is definitely the new trend. So many people walking around spending thousands of dollars on things just to fill their arms up. Like the whole religious / Rosary bead tattoos on people who are 0% religious but just because they've seen it elsewhere. I am a fan of tattoos as well. ones with meaning and that have thought put in them. I only have a small one right now that I got on vacation with a friend - so it's a nice memory for me. but I personally won't ever be getting anything big or a full sleeve of them as it just isn't my preference.

It's up to you if you want a tattoo, but remember just because it's a trend doesn't mean you have to do it. If you're not comfortable being covered in them then don't. But if you do, do it for yourself girl!
Post a photo if you get them done! Xx

Lol. yeah, definitely not a trend, people have been getting tatted for a long time. I personally love, and have loved, tattoos for as long as I can remember. I think they're beautiful. I think if people want to cover themselves up in it, power to them. I want a lot, but not to be covered up in them. Although, I do want a sleeve or maybe two.

Also, I'm sure there are regrets but each tattoo brings forth memories for the most part, so I don't think I'd regret any of mine that I do get.

To clarify, I don't think tattoos in general are a trend. I think people covering themselves in it (like the 18-25) range has become ever popular and the trend. Just for the sake of it because it looks "cool". I love hearing people's stories about their memorable tattoos and I can appreciate a good job. Some artists are crazy talented.

I understand what you mean by trend don't worry haha, a lot of people get offended because their tattoos mean a lot to them and they don't want to be seen as a simple "trend" but I do understand what you're saying. I personally do have tattoos, and both have meaning to me. But they're becoming more acceptable and widespread, I see nothing wrong with them being trendy, it's not a negative word it's a synonym for popular so I don't know why people get so defensive

Ill be twenty on tuesday and I still don't have any! I want one so bad but am so scared me and my husband have a couples tattoo in mind and whenever I get the courage will be my first but right now I just watch my husband get them he has quite a few and working on both sleeves and its definitely not a trend its been around for centuries (different cultures ) they are even stated in the bible but I don't want to get in that but I think what IS the trend are the tattoos that look hipster and what jenna has said because they see it on somebody and like it and then it becomes a chain of people getting that one tattoo. but I say if you want a tattoo get it :)

I understand what you mean by trend too, and I agree with you. For me I would never get one because there are times when I need to look professional and nice. Like for me, I want to be able to wear a strapless gown without a tattoo showing, but that's my personal preference and opinion.

I LOVE what Jacqueline said :)
I am a tattooist. What a lot of people call a tattoo artist. I don't think tattoos are a trend specifically I did read your comment on sleeves being a trend, etc. However, I think in some cases people believe it looks cool. In other cases, it is where someone chose to displace their art. My first tattoo was on my shoulder. It holds significance to me, however, many people look at it and think it is just a random design I thought looked cool. I think it's awesome, but the meaning is the best part. I think specific tattoos like the diamonds, industrial stars, generic tribal, the sparrows, feathers to birds, and infinity love symbols and anchors are becoming increasingly popular amongst women and some men. Most people now a days do not hold significance to the diamonds, they just look pretty. Other designs originated in prisons, gangs, etc. And people do not understand the meaning behind the tattoo.
On another note, I am going into medicine, ironic being a tattooist Haha, and I am getting a chest piece in December, a while after my baby is born, a couples tattoo with my husband, and beginning the work on my sleeves. I have an appreciation for them in an artistic way, and the meaning in all of them is very significant to me.  :)

I get what you mean Jenna :) I'm not a big fan of tattoos and there's only a few that I've seen that I admire or like. I don't think I could ever get a tattoo, I'm not very sentimental, and nothing has caught my eye. I think there's people that would regret it and others who will cherish them

I don't consider tattoos stylish, I consider them a poor taste.

I don't really see it so much as a trend, but more that they're becoming more acceptable, especially in the workplace. A lot of the stigma surrounding tattoos has been removed, so people who may have been fearful of it before are now taking the plunge. It's more evolutionary than trendy, in my opinion. I love that I can display my art on my body and be employed! Sure there are still some stares, and rude people but to me it's worth it.

Nathalie, you may want to consider your audience before saying something like that. From reading this thread alone, you should be able to tell that many of us here are tattooed. They may not be YOUR taste, but they are certainly not "poor taste."

I don't consider tattoos a trend and find nothing wrong with tattoos without meaning, its art and a way to express your self now a days tatoos arent permanent either there's tattoo removel its painful like a motha but it will remove it but it will take a couple of sessions and of course money, the tattoos I have right now all have meaning but I am planing to get some without meaning just cuz I found the art beautiful I think everyone is entitled to do with there body as they please

Nathelie everyone is entitled to there oppinion but there's a better way to say things I consider your choice of words poor taste
