Are tattoos stylish?

I do find full sleeves quite sexy in both men and women but I can't help but feel a little annoyed when thinking about dressing say for your wedding and having tattoos, like I can't help but think the dress would look so much nicer without them (just my opinion). It's just too permanent and it bugs me that they look great in some looks but I would rather just my skin for others looks, so I wouldn't get them. Plus I also don't like how they look amazing when just done but after a few years when they fade they turn all greyish, I reaally hate that ><. I currently am on the fence on whether I'd like my man to get a tattoo (just hypothetically speaking it's just something that came up one day and we were both on the fence about).

Not all tattoos fade that drastically. My first tattoo is over four years old and hasn't even faded *knock on wood*. It depends on your skin, health, and the care you take of your tattoos. Natalie, consider your wording when saying something like that. This is supposed to be a place where we understand and accept each other. You don't have to like it, but just because you don't like it doesn't make it poor taste. Perhaps also consider the clients I've had who went through chemotherapy and had eyebrows tattooed on because they won't grow back the same, if ever. Not every tattoo is some scary piece of work to everyone. Some women (and men) get tattoos of even things like a nipper because with breastfeeding cancer they lose them.
I would carefully consider and reevaluate your statement. Just because it got a ton of feedback does not mean you said something right or appropriate.

Definitely did make sense, Jacqueline, beautifully put. Definitely always have an appreciation for your perspective on things, it's always so graceful. Lol. Really. Well put as well Lili, I don't think all tattoos have to have meaning. Hell, I want quite a few that don't have much meaning to me other than the fact that I like what a) it symbolizes or b) I just find it beautiful/appealing.

Anyways, I love this thread and seeing all the different responses. Very interesting. Even to those who downright diss others, oh the small minded-ness ;) but that's fine, to each their own!

Wow, a lot of interesting points of view, I like and agree with a lot of the opinions here :) In terms of "trendy tattoos", Emily said it, there's no denying it: lately there have been a lot more feathers and infinity symbols.
And I agree with Lili and Jacqueline, while it usually means something, it doesn't have to have a meaning: sometimes it's there to express art!

I have a friend who is a tattoo artist. She's very talented! I thought I would never get one because I just couldn't afford it, but having friends in the business really helps! I got one of a whisk to symbolize my dream of becoming a pastry chef and I love it!

Only thing I haven't read yet...sometimes it gets sort of addicting! You go in for your first tattoo and you go out planning your next one! Has anyone else experienced this?

She literally said "I consider" them poor taste, not "they are poor taste"...that's her opinion! leave her alone. She can think what she wants, just like all of you. People are so quick to be offended these days. This is a cool thread and people made it into arguments and bashing.

@Breeze that's just what happened to me, I had been planning my first tattoo for over two years before I finally got it, and I decided that I should wait at least a year and a half before getting any tattoo just to make sure I really wanted it. But it's been so hard, as soon as I had my first I just wanted more

I don't see tattoos as a trend but there are definitely some that are very cliche and stereotypical. I guess one of mine is a cliche, my diamond tattoo, as a lot of guys who are into the rap scene where I live have gem tattoos. I wouldn't get a sleeve but that's because I don't think it suits my style, not because I don't like them.

I don't feel they're a trend, I feel that more people understand the concept behind them and accept them more, along with other body mods. I do feel like tattoos have sometimes lost their meaning lately because some people just want them because its "cute" but to each their own. Personally I think tattoos should have a meaning or an important to it just because it is permanent.

I don't have any tattoos and don't plan on getting any but not because I don't think they are wonderful. I think that if you want a small tattoo to symbolize something of importance to you you should get one. If you want it because you think it looks cool or sexy, you should get it. If someone forces you to get it or you get it only because everyone else has it-even if you don't want it- I wouldn't get it. I love couple tattoos and I love the roses for your grandparents Renay!

Tattoos can be stylish yes, although everyone is different. I get what you mean about the whole sleeve thing, but to me it seems that didn't become uber popular until all these rappers started getting them (more recent ones anyways). For my personal taste I couldn't walk into a tattoo shop and just pick one off the wall (lol). I have 3 so far, and they are all important to me. One for my husband, one for my grandpa, and one for my dad. I plan on getting another for my 26th birthday, one for my mom.

Nathalie, though I think your comment could have been worded differently, you have the right to your own opinion as long as it doesn't offend others.

I love tattoos. To me, they're a form of art on your body. I see them the same way as piercing. It's your body, do as you please! My dad has 3 tattoos, and one of them is my name across his back. I don't really have an opinion on it, but he wanted it, so I won't say anything. My mom has no tattoos because she is scared, honestly, but she is thinking about getting a flower with mine and my brother's name with it. Personally, I would love a tattoo on my lower inner arm, but I am going to school to be a physical therapist, and I am nervous about how offices will act when they know I have tattoos that will show. I think it's pretty ridiculous how most jobs do not allow tattoos to show - unless it's an inappropriate word or image, I think they shouldn't have to be covered up. Now, on to the tattoo I would get - I'd definitely get something small and simple. Maybe a lotus flower, because of the meaning. Or even an arrow. I understand these are seen as "trendy" tattoos, but it's upsetting when you've liked a tattoo for so long and now that it's trendy, you don't want to get it anymore haha. I completely agree with Jacqueline

@Breeze, you are absolutely right! At least for me, I find tattoos incredibly addicting. But I love everything about tattoos, and their history, and the culture, so to me it's a great thing! Except for the cost lol. But I have a rule that even though I want a new tattoo as soon as I've gotten one done, I will wait at least a year after I've gotten the idea for a new tattoo. If I still want it in a year, I go for it!

Yes Breeze! My first tattoo ever took nearly 3 hours and the whole time I sat there planning my next one. Lol.

I just love the feeling of it. As weird as that sounds. Very relaxing, and I love the environment in a shop. Just makes you feel at ease (if you know your artists and the others around)

Thank you Miriam. I plan on getting a whole sleeve with the main theme being roses to symbolize those who made a huge impact on me. :)

I think tattoos are very cool, but not because they're considered "cool" by other people. Hopefully you understand what I'm saying. I would like to get a few tattoos when I'm older, but I have to think carefully about the decision because so many great jobs will not allow any tattoos to be visible. Just think carefully about that when you are applying for jobs.

For some people they get tattoos for memories of other people, or something they highly believe in... I'm not a tattoo girl, only because I know I'll regret getting one!!

I agree. I don't think it's a trend. people are just more open about it now and don't really care about people's negative opinions on tattoos anymore.

Renay, I totally agree. For me, sitting in a tattoo shop getting work done is like a form of therapy. I find it very relaxing! Except for hour 6 of my most recent tattoo lol I was pretty done at that point.

I have 3 tattoos and I'm obsessed. The ONLY reason why I'm not completely covered is because of work. I don't think it's necessarily a trend it's just that people are becoming more "tolerant" of them and more people are willing to express themselves.

Okay, so it's not only me! :)

If jobs allowed tattoos I think I would be more interested in getting inked. But for now, I'd rather wait and see what job options I'll have when I'm older so that I can confirm what I'm allowing myself to do.
