I used to use latex gloves (or alternatives if you are allergic). Keeps it off the hands and on the skin!

I use a liquid self-tanner (it's an airbrush formulation). I wear latex gloves and use a round microfiber car pad (the kind that is used for waxing cars) to apply

I've tried other techniques like latex sponges, misting bottles. Sponge paintbrushes, etc. but the car pad method works the best for me

I use tomas spray tan. It's about $15 from Sally's. I get an even brown tan that lasts about 4 days.

I use a mitt with a gel or sometimes mousse formulation. Maybe you are just not putting enough product on the mitt?

Try adding the liquid to a lotion, mixing it together and then applying with the mitt. Itll give the liquid something to hold on to besides the mitt.

I use rubber gloves too, never a mitt.

Rubber gloves I agree with that idea I use them when applying my spray tan it make it less streaky and doesn't soak up the tan at all :)
