I'd just bleach your hair then get pravana purple and put it on top of it after you towel dry your hair after the bleach.

There are multiple brand options depending on your preference: Ion Brights, Pravana, Fudge Paintbox, Manic Panic, and Directions. Most people seem to prefer Manic Panic or Ion because they are available in most beauty shops, but Pravana is highly suggested if you're willing to purchase online. Manic Panic has the largest range of shades to choose from; Pravana and Ion are professional brands known for lasting the longest between touch-ups.
As for bleaching the highlights you will need for that look, I suggest visiting a professional--especially if you have never bleached your hair before. Bleaching is a bit finicky, let alone sectioning and bleaching only specific sections and making sure it all processes evenly. Depending on where you live and what salon you go to, it shouldn't cost much more than what it would cost to buy all of the stuff to bleach your own hair. Then you can add the purple yourself at home. Or hell, just have them do the purple and be done with it, if they have that option. A lot of salons offer unnatural colors nowadays.

The salon I got my blue done at has the Pravana purple shade so definitely go to your local salon (s) and see if they use it as well and get it done there (:

Thank you guys so much, I think I'm going to take Emily's advice and get it bleached then use pravana to do the purple at home. anyone know how light I should I get it bleached, or just tell the people at the salon what I want to do?

When I got my blue done my hair got bleached to a white blonde color so the blue could be as vibrant as possible (:

Bleaching to white will take multiple sessions and won't be totally necessary to achieve a vibrant purple. A pale yellow is adequate (like the inside of a ripe banana) and will result in a vibrant violet. Even a light orange is workable if you are worried about damaging your hair (depending on the health of your hair, achieving a higher lift might not be advisable), it will end up a deeper purple.

I'm definitely worried about damage, considering I swim/ work in a pool, so my hair is already slightly damaged from chlorine. plus, I prefer a deeper purple, so probably will try to go with the light orange.
