Ok so I have only ever had my hair dyed a handful of times at the salon by an old friend who is no longer in town, but since I just graduated with my BA, I want to treat myself to a new look. The thing is, I am curious as to consultation etiquette? I don't want to walk into a salon and feel that, because I get a hair quote, I have to go with that stylist.
Is there a correct way to shop around for the best pricing, or is this even a rude concept?
I'm asking because I know stylists charge good $$ due to their experience and knowledge, but I'm still not employed full-time and am on a "recovering college student" budget. I realize what I want will be pricey, I'm thinking highlights or ombré on medium brown hair, but I still don't want to over pay. Any suggestions?

No its not rude at all to shop around. Its no different than buying a car or a house. You are going to pay what fits your budget and needs. Just be very upfront with the stylist and inform them that you are there for a consultation. I don't know what city you reside in but where I am ombres cost more than highlights and if on a budget be mindful that you will need to purchase products to extend the longevity of your color.

Great, thank you for the info. I will definitely take the cost of upkeep in mind :)

I'd hit up Yelp or Foursquare..look at pics and read reviews as well as pricing info and then book a few consultations. They are pros and know going in that you are considering other options...so be open about it. I agree, upkeep on color can be pricey. Mine is a pain, even with friends that are pros. Good luck and congrats!

Thank you for both the reply and the kind congrats. I'm very relieved to finally be done and that's why I'm treating myself to a new look. I've been shopping around via Yelp but I'll give Foursquare a shot too :)
