The title says it all. I read an unclear post about it and it has left me wanting to know exactly what is it.

Just an outbreak of acne. Usually from being irritated suddenly.

It's usually when you try a new face product and your skin reacts. Not always negative as it can mean it's getting the bacteria out in order to be blemish free. It can be normal. It's hard to tell if you should stop using the product or wait it out

When you first start using a product especially one meant to clear your skin, sometimes it will cause an initial breakout making your skin seem like it's getting worse. However it is actually just bringing blackheads and acne that was trapped under the skin to the surface to clear it up completely.

That way your skin gets a healthy new start right down to your pores.

Leslie and Angela nailed it on the nose. Its nothing to be super worried about. After about a week or two the skin adjusts and the purge clears itself up. Now its a problem if your skin crops up with painful cystic acne in the wake of using a new product...if that occurs...immediately stop using the suspect product.

Skin purging occurs with the use of active ingredients that promote cell turnover, like ahas, bhas, glycolic acid, etc. Your skin 'pushes out' the bacteria from your clogged pores possibly resulting in a papule or white head. Purging occurs where you already have clogged pores, if you experience a breakout in a new spot, it is most likely just that, a breakout. The myth is that anytime you use a new product on your face and you notice bumps that your skin is just purging, that is not true. if this occurs cease use immediately

Angela is right, a product that is meant to clear your skin & contains active ingredients cause this reaction. Not a new daily cleanser, moisturizer, etc.because those products have no ingredients in them that promote cell turnover

Sarah is absolutely right , purging occurs after chemical exfoliaters retinol as well , but I wouldn't say because you get a few pimples after starting a new product you have to stop your skin takes time to adjust to any new routine so if you have a few pimples at the onset of using new products if may clear up after a few uses , there is a difference between a few random pimples and a breakout or irritated look , if those happen then definitely stop use.

Yes Traci thank you for clarifying, a few random pimples would not mean you must stop using, I re read what I wrote and it was worded wrong. Sometimes pimples may occur at the same time as a new product but it could also be many other things
