Brushes, foundation in whatever coverage you like, eyeliner in your preferred form, mascara, and a setting spray (ELF makes an excellent one that is $3) are the bare "essentials". If you're looking for a bit more, an eye shadow palette (ELF makes several, personally I think the 144 is best), a matte bronzer, an eye/face primer, and concealers (under eye and spot) are great basics. It really depends on your style for what things you need/don't need.
