What's the best way to become a professional makeup artist? Either do the qualified course online or go to a makeup/beauty school? What do you think?

I agree, school is definitely going to give you a bit of a leg up. You'll learn valuable information and will probably get a starter kit of the basics, as well as job opportunities as Tanya mentioned. Mainly it looks professional to have a degree backing you up as well. Being able to show proof of your knowledge in the form of a degree can land you a job over someone who doesn't have any kind of certification.
Of course that's not to say that there aren't amazing self taught artists out there who get work and do well, but its good to have the documentation to convey to people at a glance that you're serious and professional

I was in this dilemma a few weeks ago, and I chose beauty school. Only because with beauty school you get your cosmetology license. A makeup a school or a makeup school online only gives you a certificate in makeup. You will get hired more easily if you have your license :)

Its actually not true that you are more likely to get hired with your cosmo license. The truth is, beauty school is there to teach you the basics in EVERYTHING, and most schools will barely touch on the subject of makeup at all if anything. Their focus is to get you to pass state board and get you out to learn real experience. Ive been licensed for years and have taught beautyschool for 4years and it has been difficult for myself even getting a job at the makeup counter. i now have to try to get certified in makeup! It sounds ridiculous but its so true!

Just to add: I would go to a makeup oriented beauty school. Not a cosmetology program unless you also want to do hair. I've heard that cosmo schools only teach you very minimally about makeup though. So if you want to do strictly makeup then choose a school that offers just that. You may get more work if you know how to do hair, but its possible to not do hair and still work as a makeup artist. Don't pay for something you don't need/don't want to do.
