Trendy and playful, blue mascara has a way of reappearing right when makeup starts to feel a little too serious. It had its big moment in the '80s, surfaced again once or twice in the decades that followed, and now it’s back. But this time is a little different.
This time around, the appeal is straightforward: blue makes eyes look brighter, bigger, and more awake. It adds color without requiring a full commitment. No blending three shadows, no careful cut crease. Just a swipe of mascara, and your everyday makeup suddenly has a little more intrigue.
It’s also one of the most wearable ways to bring color into your routine. If you tend to skip eyeshadow—or, like me, prefer not to spend your summer convincing powder to stay put—blue mascara is the shortcut. It’s something unexpected without feeling like you’ve wandered too far from your usual face.
For festivals, concerts, vacations, rooftop drinks, or any day when black mascara feels a little too practical, blue is the move. Wear it alone with fresh skin and a sheer lip, layer it over black for a softer flash of color, or concentrate it on the lower lashes for a subtle hit that catches the light.
While black eyeliner will always have its place, I’ll be reaching for blue over the next few months. It feels brighter, lighter, and a lot more fun.
