Medium Mixologist: How to Layer Your Makeup for Innovative Effects
Published Jul 21, 2012
Need a little inspiration to get you out of your neutral makeup look? Layering textures—think gloss, powder, cream and color— can result in a completely new take on a classic look. Check out three ways to play mix-master with your makeup.
THE MERMAID EFFECT

Create a color splash by placing a frosty cerulean blue shadow over a yellow-tinged eye liner. Use a light hand when layering the shadow so that the yellow undertones will shine through. You’ve just created your very own iridescent, siren-approved teal!
THE SMOKEY EYE

Give a new spin on the smoky eye by patting a dark, shimmering purple over black liner. The effect will turn a flat, matte line into something deeper and multi-dimensional.
THE VAMPY LIP

Transform a seductive mouth into something a bit more metallic by dusting gold pigment over the center of your lips. Enhance the high-shine highlight even further with a dab of highly reflective gloss on top.
