How to Contour Monolids

Hey everyone. So today's video is aimed mostly at those with monolids. I'm going to show you how to do contour and define your eyes so that they look more three- dimensional. It just gives your eyes some more definition. So keep watching.

First, you're going to start out with primer, like always. This helps your eye shadow stay on longer. It also creates a more even base for your eye shadows to stick to. It just makes the eye shadow application easier.

As you can see, I already have eyeliner and mascara on. This is actually just an eye shadow tutorial for now. Later I'm going to go ahead and show you how I apply my eyeliner. Stay tuned for that video at a later time.

Whichever colors you choose, you want to have a light, a medium, and a dark color. So today I'm going to be doing brown. I'll probably be using this color, I don't know if you can see that. This is going to be the color I'm choosing. It's just a very light, light beige, off-white color.

You want to apply that all over your lids. You want to choose something that's light and that's going to highlight your eyes. Don't ever, I mean, this is just me, but I never apply dark shadows all the way up to my brow bone because it just makes my eyes look smaller.

Take the second lightest color you have, and just pat it all over your lids, but don't go past where your crease would be. If you push in your eye right here with your brush, you can tell where your natural crease would be. That's where you want to apply the eye shadow up to, but you don't want to go past it. Just really sweep that up over your lid.

It took me a really long time to figure out how to do my eye makeup. Because I was always, like, 'Oh, I don't have a crease. It's so hard.' It was very difficult to learn how to do it but I accept the fact that I have monolids right now. Monolids are just as beautiful as those with double eyelids. There's definitely ways you can work around not having a crease.

Once you have the second lightest color, then you take a contour brush. Right now I'm just using this type, just a small contour brush. You're going to take the third, the darkest color that you're going to be using. I'll probably be using, let's see, this color right here. You're going to apply it to the very outer corners of your eye. It's called the 'outer V', I believe.

Right here and you're going to bring it in. You're going to gently brush it into where your crease would be. But you don't want to bring it too far in because, I don't know how to explain it, it doesn't look right if you bring it all the way. It kind of closes off your eye.

You're just going to blend that to your outer corner. You want to keep the color darkest right at the outer corner. Go ahead and blend that in very well. Make sure there are no color changes.

Don't worry if you don't get this the first try. It's taken me years probably to learn how to finalize right. Practice makes perfect. Don't worry if it doesn't look exactly like everybody else's. It's really how you feel comfortable doing it. This video is telling you that you should do it this way. This is just a guideline if you need somewhere to get started. As you can see, it's already got more depth than this side. It's definitely more defined. You can see where your crease would be.

Go ahead and do the other eye. Try to get the shadow as even as you can on both eyes.

The reason we put the lightest color on first is because now your brow bones are already highlighted. Having the lighter color up here definitely brings out your eyes more and makes them look more contoured.

Okay, now that we've got that. Then the last step is to get a light color, preferably in the same color range, maybe the same one you used on your brow bones. Go ahead and take that shadow. You're going to apply it to the top of your eyelids. Then blink down towards the inner corner. This is really going to make your eyes pop and add that last bit of definition. You can also highlight the inner corners of your eyes. This doesn't have anything to do with contouring. It just makes your eyes look brighter.

Okay and there you go. If you feel like there's too many harsh edges, go ahead and blend it out. You want everything to look very natural and blended. You don't want harsh lines. You don't want people to be able to tell you're trying to create a crease or anything.
