Well, I tan with the sun.
But you can use self-tanner, I use Johnsons gradual tanner, it works really well. Garnier do one too, both moisturising self-tanners.

I lay out for hour increments, applying the product every 30 minutes if I am splashing myself with the pool water to stay cool. I love the tropics line I believe. :) and I always make sure I have ice water. The lowest SPF I use is 15, which is the lowest number that will protect you from the harmful rays, and I go up to 30-45. I'm Italian and I have the Italian skin so I don't burn

You can use simple gradual tan lotion. also put baby oil and go out in the sun... go to a pool and youll automatically have a tan from the chlorine in the water if its outside pool.

I lay out in the sun for no longer than 15-20 minutes (I live in scorching hot Arizona) and I use a lotion for gradual tanning. I use the Walmart brand of Jergan's Natural Glow (It's called Equate Healthy Glow and it's half the price hehe) and that stuff works amazingly!

Test your skin type to know how long to lay out for, but never more than 20 minutes. You should basically just pay attention to your skin because you're not being harmed until you're burning :) As for lotion, don't get a drug store lotion, they are actually banned in indoor tanning beds because they erode acrylic and imagine what that does to your skin! I'd get an indoor lotion as they have tyrosine to stimulate the melanin in your skin and allow you to tan at your maximum capacity.

Boil 2 cups if water
Steep 4 black tea bags in it
Spray it evenly on the area
Wait till it dries and do a 2nd coat if you need it

I use the sun to tan :)
I use a lotion though so I don't burn since I am a red head. But even then just being outside gives me a really nice tan :) I get a tanning lotion with SPF in it ^_^

@Brittany
"you're not being harmed until you're burning..."
A lot of people think that, but the tan skin that you see is damaged skin cells, trying to protect your skin from even more damage, so yes you are being harmed. I'm not going to preach about the harms of tanning, but it bothers me when people spread wrongful and misleading information. People can make their own decisions, I just want to make sure they also know what is happening to their bodies and potential risks.

I can't really answer because my skin is naturally tan. I never lose it. I get even more tan during summer. And I don't wear sunscreen because I don't burn.
