How do you know if it's two shades within your hair color?

I'm sorry I'm asking so many questions about this but I'm dying my hair and I keep stumbling upon this saying on websites and I don't quite understand
"1. Stay within two shades of your current hair color. Don't try to go platinum if you're a brunette, please. Keep the heavy-duty dramatic changes to the professionals. At-home hair color products were not chemically designed for this type of transformation."
