About two weeks ago I had my hair colored and highlighted...long story short hair color turned out awful and some of the highlighed pieces are completely broken!! needless to say all that on top of a shorter cut then I wanted.. I'm very unhappy.
I'm going to leave it be for now but need to get something done in the beginning of June for an event. so my question is should or can I dye completely over all the highlights or should I just have them throw a toner in to lift the roots and brighten up the base or dye the roots and tone the rest.
I'm trying to do the least damage I can before I do it again before my brother's wedding in august. any advise is greatly appreciated

Do you have a picture of the highlights? I'm not a professional but I might be able to help :)

You can either get a Demi permanent toner or all over but nothing permanent overtop as it would damage the highlights more...and get a new hairdresser, they should have known better to take them that light to the point of breakage!

Thanks shaye. I don't its hard to see in a photo. in the front on the side and top there are pieces that are shorter then the rest it just frizzy fried and broken off. I know I can't take a chance highlighting for the events I have coming up my hair is to far gone. I just don't know if dying over it would be just as bad but it really looks terrible.

I think you'd be okay dying over them as long as it's a darker shade, not lighter. Also if you didn't want to give up that quickly on your highlights you could try leaving a toning shampoo on them on dry hair for about 20 minutes or a little longer to make them more of an ashy colour.

Ditch thAt stylist!! I've come across at least one stylist in every salon I worked that continually fry the hell out of hair with bleach. I wish I could see your hair I may be able to give advice but fried hair =hell no in my book. I never fried anyone's hair but my own! Would definitely go for a Demi perm toner to keep breakage minimal instead of more lifting. If you dye it go with Demi perm too. Do not redye if you plan on getting hilites again. That would be trouble. If you want the hilites work with a toner to get it to desire able color. Good luck darlin! Wish I could help. Do not let that stylist refry your hair!! Either the stylist sux or is too busy to take care of you correctly. I've seen great stylists over book them selves then leave bleach sitting too long too many times!! They're like a little breakage doesn't hurt. Not IMO!!

Thanks Mary I wish you could see it too. I know I have to find someone new and its such bad timing and I liked the color she had done in the past before screwing it up. I think I may know why it happened though each time I went in she would dye my roots wash and dry it then lift it again w the highlights. I questioned why and she said it gave her more control. I'm not a hair stylist so trusted in what she was doing. that was a mistake!

Sound like she's inexperienced to me. I would have done it all in one step then toned. Bleaching out the fresh color could throw off the hilites. It's hard to tell if you can trust a stylist. We're taught fake it til you make it!!

I would call around and ask for a color correction specialist at a different salon and bring pics of your ideal color. It might be expensive but you'll look good for your event!!
