I know someone who was treated for skin cancer on face, they didn't wear sunscreen often, Dr scolded them and said to please wear it. I think its safer to wear than not to wear :-) ask Dr next time your in.

The only way it can cause cancer is indirectly from not getting enough vitamin d, BUT on the other hand it cannot prevent cancer, which is why sunscreen companies are not allowed to claim that.

I've been seeing controversial talk about some who are saying that the "sun does not cause cancer". I'm not one to stop listening to the majority of drs who say that the excessive sun exposure (& tanning beds) can cause skin cancer. Usually these controversial people are using the vague phrase: THE SUN DOES NOT CAUSE SKIN CANCER. And to an extent that is true. The sun does not cause skin cancer per se, it's actually good for you, helping your body produce Vit D, a necessary nutrient. BUT and a big BUT, is that "excessive sun exposure esp. those causing burns can contribute to skin cancers, basel, squamous & the most deadly...MELANOMA. My philosopy in life is EVERYHING IN MODERATION. I wear sunscreen everyday on my face & neck (which are the parts of my body that is always exposed.) I wear hats & sunglasses when in the sun for extended periods of time. I don't hide from the sun but I also don't purposely try to tan & will stay under an unbrella when vacationing. And would never use tanning beds. Could I be wrong? Sure I could. But more data needs to be proven before I change my opinion on this matter. I'm open to any new information on this & have read & listened to these controversial people & their opinions. What I do notice is that the people who are saying sunscreen is bad usually having really dark tans. Makes one think that they have an agenda & are trying to justify their sun worshipping. I'm not saying this is true, just saying its the impression I get from them.

Janelle the only issue when it comes to that is that people get cancer in places that are rarely exposed to the sun, therefore causing inconsistent data that doesn't allow sunscreen to claim they prevent cancer. It's literally illegal for them to claim that, there's a government fact for ya. I would still wear an SPF 10 on the face, simply to prevent wrinkles in the long run. But you never need much more than an SPF 15 unless you're going our for prolonged periods of time. Of course, things like burning break down your skins defence system and make you more susceptible to cancers and disease, but no ones asking you to go fry :)

As someone who is dealing with skin cancer due to me not applying sunscreen in a hard to reach area...I now have a staunch opinion that too much sun exposure without protection is just insane. A lil sun is good for Vitamin D but one can get that thru proper diet. I never thought in a million years I'd be dealing with it because I'm pretty much on top of my overall skin health...but constantly missing sunscreen application on my back now has me missing a nice chunk of flesh from my back and radiation treatments. I've heard the argument about sunscreen causing cancer but after what I've been dealing with I think not using it at all just amps up the chance of getting skin cancer.

Sorry to hear that Shelley! The only thing I'll reply to what you said is that you need 3 large salmon daily for sufficient vitamin d. I also agree you shouldn't be going out completely without any protection, and would like to clarify the only thing I'm against is COMPLETELY shielding yourself from the sun as so many people do these days!

I've read a lot about this due to me using lightening products a couple of years ago and needed a good sunscreen. I've read that sunscreen doesn't necessarily cause skin cancer. Chemical sunscreen needs to be applied 20 minutes prior to exposure and reapplied often because most sunscreen is 90% less effective after an hour. Chemical sunscreens are nice because they're not as thick but they do absorb the suns UV rays and are absorbed by the skin and some can mutate and cause free radicals which can cause cancer while a physical sunscreen like titanium dioxide or zinc oxide sits on top of the skin and blocks the suns rays. I played it safe and only use physical sunscreen

@Brittany...vitamin d can be sourced from so many things...not just salmon. If I ate salmon everyday I'd go crazy.lol. I don't believe in banning the sun completely from one's life. I do have a few friends who live like that and I think that is just depressing. @Janelle,Megan...thank you beautifuls...I have my big girl panties on...I know I'm going to be ok. Just look forward to getting a clean bill of health and being done with it.

Girl, anything & everything these days will give you cancer! I work in the radiation oncology field & see some awful skin cancer cases. The radoncs I work w/ stress wearing SPF! After treating a patient whose BCC was eating away at his face, you'd be diligent about wearing SPF too.
