What exactly is a smoky eye?

Ok so I've been trying to do smokey eye for year now, but never got it right, probably because I don't really know how to do one, please help:)

This is a good example of a smokey eye. You can ask Jacqueline H for a much better description, but the way I do it is:
-apply dark eyeliner and smudge it over my lid
-apply my lightest shade under my eyebrow and down to my crease
-apply my midtone color into my crease
-apply my darkest color to the lid
-blend everything with a clean brush

If you can see where one color starts and the other ends, keep blending.

Nope, any deep color will work :) just make sure it's all the same color family to help the graduation of colors be as smooth as possible.
