My hair is black and I want to use henna to dye it brown. I've heard that if you have really black hair the only way to make it lighter is by bleaching it which I don't want to do...do you think Henna will work?

No. It won't. It'll only give your hair a reddish tint.

Be careful using henna. Many commercial henna preparations contain metallic salts that will react with conventional hair dye/bleach. Many professionals will not touch hair that has been colored with henna because it is so unpredictable. If you don't like it, you pretty much have to wait for it to grow out.
Color will never lighten, only change the hue. If you want to go lighter, I suggest going to a salon and having it done professionally. It is more reliable, less likely to damage, and a hell of a lot cheaper than going in to get a correction for a bad DIY job.

I didn't say always. I said that a lot of them do, which is true. Also, most salons I have seen will refuse to color over henna-treated hair regardless of what was used, because it is a crap shoot for getting proper results. Just trying to warn everyone, so that they can make an informed decision.

Get it bleached by a professional first, don't do it yourself! I used lush caca noir yesterday to make my hair darker (dark brown to black) and it is lovely, they do caca brun for just brown hair and the product is 100% natural, it'll also make your hair soft shiny and healthier after bleaching. The only con is that it is soooo messy.
