I would read the Building Your Kit article in the editorial section - very helpful!
I personally would focus on brushes & making sure you have all the ones you need. then start to work you way towards other things (:

Personally, I think the hardest thing to get is foundation! You need different types, colors, and finishes. I think a really great option could be to buy foundation kits from MUA stores like RCMA or Graftobian. If you choose to buy a bunch of foundations in different colors, it will take probably take a long time to aquire them all, so get started as soon as you can!
Another thing to start collecting is lipsticks. Wayne Goss gave me the awesome tip to depot lipsticks and put them in little kits. That way you can easily see every color and apply it perfectly with a lip brush. As an MUA you never know who your client may be so it is a good idea to have a wide variety of neutral and bold colors that suit every skin tone.
Eyeshadows, bronzers, mascaras, primers, skincare products, and blushes are typically easy to accumulate, but like the others make sure you have something to suit everyone.
You should also have lots of supplies. Carry brush cleanser, ponytails, headbands, makeup remover, etc. Whatever you think you'll need to get the job done best.
Lastly, make sure you have a solid brush set. You should probably have a backup of each brush in case the one you are using is dirty or breaks. Make sure you have a brush for everything you do. Also if you tend to do intricate eye looks, make sure you have many blending brushes, shader brushes, etc. to make sure you can make a clean look.
Good luck 💋
