Wont really be able to lighten your hair without bleach or a blonde dye. Blonde dyes will lift the colour a few shades so thats the least damaging way I can think of, and its easier to control/anticipate results compared to bleach.

Save the trouble and go to a professional. Blonde is difficult to do righht at home because like Jacqlyn mentioned, it could go orange, but could also really damage your hair. Sun in used to work really well for maintaining blonde hair when I had it but it can be bad for the hair because its very drying for some (I didn't have this issue but I have really healthy/thick hair that isn't easy to damage).
