Can putting on too much chapstick make your lips dry?

I had really dry, so I started put tub tons of chapstick on throughout the day. Pretty soon, my lips became soft again, but I kept wearing chapstick on to prevent them from getting dry again. Well, now they are dry and flaky again- if it is the chapstick that's making my lips dry, what can I do to soften them again?

Which one are you using. If it contains petroleum jelly then it's really not moisturising your lips. it just forms a barrier between the air and your skin. which in turn makes your lips dry again. I had a phase when they weren't suit in me. tried different ones but nothing worked. finally started using chubby stick from clinque and fell in love with it. maybe you can try it.

Hannah, I have been using Vaseline lip therapy. And, yes. I am guilty of smacking my lips quite often.

I'm with Jacqlyn. Vaseline is a sealant, so if you're applying it to your lips and they're dry, it's not helping. Also, smacking your lips rubs off the product and basically returns your lips to normal/dry because saliva can dry them out. I have a few favorite chapsticks: Nivea Lip Butters, Lucas' PawPaw ointment, Fresh Lip Therapy, and the Yes To brand chapsticks. They're all amazing, contain no drying ingredients and seriously hydrate. Just make sure you aren't smacking/licking your lips and removing them =)

I use Vaseline because it was proven that mainstream Chapstick companies are used to moisturize only for a little while until your lips crave more. So you're paying for your lips to get dry n cracked each time.

^ Exactly!. I wish people would stop thinking Vaseline is a cure all. It isn't. It doesn't DO anything or add anything back to the skin, hair or lips. It SEALS moisture in but also clogs pores, tear ducts, etc. It is not good to put on your body. There are many brands that are petroleum free. I guarantee that your lips will feel so much better when you switch to one without it. Your lips will actually be getting moisturizing ingredients versus a sealant that simply gives the appearance of moisturization. Fresh lip balm, as some of the other girls mentioned already, is AMAZING. It's totally worth the high price point. I wish they were cheaper but I find them totally worth it regardless. But if you can't afford it go with one of the other brands Hannah mentioned, like the Yes To brand, they're much cheaper but are still better quality.

Petroleum jelly is amazing , it creates a thick barrier between the lips , as soon as the petroluem jelly starts goin away fromnure lis you start notcing , uts reaaly good. Chapsticks are bull****. Most of them.

I get so tired of seeing it suggested for every little thing. It does have some uses but I honestly think people rely on it too much, not knowing that it doesn't actually do much at all.

Ugh, its so gross lol. It cracks me up though, there's a plethora of products that don't have it in them that are only a couple bucks more than the ones that have it. I'd rather spend $2-3 more for ingredients that are actually beneficial.

The only thing I use vaseline for is the sore red cracks around my nose when I have a cold and blow it too much. It's one of the only things that soothes and doesn't burn.

Erin you absolutely have to try the new BITE Agave lip mask!
It is thick and very rich but I can guarentee you it will last on your lips for hours. I put it on before I go to bed and I wake up with it still on! Its a very versatile product. After using vaseline *unknowingly* from when I was probably about 12 until I was 19, I have learned the hard way that vaseline is crap! spend that extra money and have a lip product that won't dry out your lips and will actually last!
Since I learned, I have tried the Hourglass Lip Treatment Oil, Amore Pacific Moisture Bound Lip Treatment, Fresh Lip Treatments, Josie Maran Lip Treatment, and Rosebud Salve.
With that being said, a lot of those are a bit pricey, but they all work wonders! The Bite, by far has been the best thing I've ever used! You won't regret dishing out the cash. The product has only been out since like the January and it has almost 600 reviews staying strong with 4 and a half stars gurl that doesn't happen often!!!
