I just recently started using Macadamia Natural Oil Deep Repair Mask & Healing Oil because of the rave reviews online, and it does leave my hair amazingly soft and shiny. Then I started reading about silicones in products and this has some of the worst ones! Are silicones something I should really be worried about? Or is it something a clarifying shampoo once a week will take care of?

After looking around online I'm thinking I may have to make my own hair masks and oils at this point because they seem to be in everything!

Silicones... How bad? Don't Worry, Kinda Bad, Horrible?

Here's an article breaking down silicones in hair products and how to remove buildup. Hope that helps. Excellent question. Eager to hear others thoughts.

Haha that's actually the exact article I read about silicones! 😄 I'm still just not sure how hyped up silicones are yanno? I mean I know sulfates and parabens(sp?) are really bad and I always make sure to avoid those, wondering If I need to add silicones to my list... Then my list of products to use might get super small lol.

Silicone is safe, as long as your not injecting it. It's been used for decades in hair and cosmetic applications. There was a uproar in the early 90's of silicone breast implants causing illness, and they were taken off the market. Ruptured ones will cause problems, as silicone migrates throughout the body it is possible to cause a inflammatory reaction. Newer implants have been introduced with thicker silicone that won't leak, even when cut open, and millions of woman walk around with silicone inside them, and don't have issues. I have a catheter in my head that's surgically implanted, to measure pressure in my head. It's made with silicone, and causes no issue with me.
The bottom line is that science has yet to show a link to illness from cosmetics or hair care, the biggest problem is product buildup can cause dull and lifeless hair, and a good clarifying shampoo will fix that.

I tried to cut them out before thinking they were causing a reaction on my skin and realized they weren't. They are in almost everything so for me a lil doesn't hurt. If I see a product with a ton of them I look and see my other choices I can buy. It seems like a product can be filled with better stuff especially when you're paying an arm and a leg.

I have curly hair and using a clarifying shampoo often (I shampoo 1-2a week) would do more harm than the silicones in my situation.

Yeah don't think there is reallly anything super super wrong with them, just that they don't have any 'real' benefits to you hair, the super soft feeling you get is due to the use of silicone coating it - not your hair actually getting healthy via using that specific product, atleast thats what a lot of places say. So when you can avoid it, such as buying 'natrual' products then I'd get natrual ones instead (not that I do ahah!), other than that I don't think there is much of an issue as far as damaging the hair.

My hair just cannot handle too many cones. It can take 1 or 2 but anything more than that its not happening...I don't care how many rave reviews it received. It gives the user a false sense of security that the hair is moisturized when in fact it really isn't.

I Have a love-hate relationship with silicones. On one hand I like how it makes my hair look & feel but I know its drying in the long run. So I still use my Moroccan Oil after washing my hair but I stopped using it on dry hair. Now I'm using Aveda Dry Remedy Daily Oil with no silicones in it & 99% natural & I love it. I have naturally dry, thick, wavy, color-treated hair that NEVER gets oily. I put this stuff on either everyday or every other day inbetween shampooing and my hair so shiny & not oily or weighed down. I usually wash once a week but after my every 3 month color, cut & blowout (the only time heat touches my hair) I don't wash my hair for 2-3 weeks. And I've been using this oil ever since then and my hair is still Not oily! I am a freak. I highly recommend this oil to those with thick dry hair, curly hair, ethnic hair and those with dry brittle hair (only on ends if your hair is not thick or tread lightly if you use it all over). Its a small bottle but you don't need a lot because it is pure oil. $32 (I know, but worth it esp. knowing that you're doing something good for your hair).

@Kenna W. Great! I hope you love it as much as I do. I have used a lot of haircare products in my life and I only had ONE Holy Grail, my Wen cleanser. But this oil has been added to my Holy Grail List. Let me know how you like it. Oh, and I also recommend the SHINE BRUSH to go with. Finally, with the help of these 2 products, I finally have shiny hair!

I'm really liking it so far, it's similar to the other oils I've used but without the silicones so thats great! I use if on damp hair before I blow-dry and my hair is soooo soft and silky even though it's bleached now! :) Thanks!

Oh is that the Wet Brush Brand? Cause I've been meaning to pick on of those up!! I've heard ya'll raving about it on here!

@Kenna W. You can use that oil on dry hair too. AND yes, I have the Wet Brush which can be uses on wet or dry hair but made for wet hair. But the Shine Brush which has boar bristles is for dry hair because thats when the shine is added.
