I want to go from like fire truck red to a chocolate brown. should I use a lightener or a dye remover first? or will it just cover properly...

What color brown did you use?

@ Jacqlyn, that's probably because you're talking about using a Color stripper, all colour strippers leave your hair a coppery kind of colour, whereas using bleach it's a lot easier to determine the colour or the blonde you want to come out. It really isn't that hard and the orange stage of being blonde honestly is not that bad, you can still tone orange down using toner to make it more ashy.

I had the same problem as Erin...my hair had a red tint to it for a few months after multiple dark brown hair dyes. It was horrible! So you should definitely bleach first.

Honestly you can dye right ovee it..but I wouldnt just in case you get bored of hour color...I'd you do get bored and try to strip it out (like going from a brown over a previous red to a lighter color) it would be super messy and extremely damaging to your hair. if I were you I would shampoo my hair..a lot like two or three times..and condition afterward...then I would use the color remover to take out the remaining red tones... I'd you sont have a lot of caah I recommend getting "color oops" I believe its called..its like 10-15 at drug stores like walgreens and cvs..you may need two boxes red is a hard color to remove. then after all of that, you could apply any brown color.

instead of color oops (may also be called color off) you can get a similar peoduct by redken (if you prefer professional products) hope that was helpful
