So I've been doing some research on how often one should wash their hair. And I figured I should just get some opinions on here since I'm getting mixed information online.

I have super fine hair and I've always had a problem with it being oily. If I take a shower at night my hair will be oily the next morning. I've always had to wash my hair everyday because I just hate going out with oily hair. I also have a problem with dandruff. Well I'm not sure if it's dandruff or just build up from washing my hair because dandruff shampoos have never worked.

But I keep hearing of girls who wash their hair once every 3 days or so and their hair looks so good. I'm thinking about getting into that routine. It's going to be tough at first but do you think it'll work? I don't want to waste a week having oily hair for nothing.

Do you all have any tips or experience with this? I appreciate any help.

I used to wash my hair everyday. Now it's 2-3 times a week.

Just start using dry shampoo and when you're not going anywhere just don't wash your hair, leave it oily as long as you possibly can. Eventually your hair will get used to it.
And try cleansing conditioners every second wash so you're not stripping oils as much

Thank you Alyx. I think I'm going to go though with it😬

Do you use a certain brand of cleansing conditioner?

Since I don't wash my hair that often I don't use cleansing conditioners.
But I know herbal essences has one that people like. I'd also use a sulfate free shampoo. :)

I know it sucks to have oily hair, but two years ago I used to get oily hair in like 6 hours after washing. But now I can go a week without washing in the winter (when I don't sweat often) and in the summer twice or three times a week. It just takes enduring the oily days. I idea to put my hair up or braid it and put a hat on if I'm going somewhere on oily days. You could even try to just go every second day for a week, and even that will lessen the oiliness. :)

I have been thinking about switching to herbal essences for a while. I will have to pick some up when I run out of mine.

Yeah I will probably be wearing my hair up for the next week and using my dry shampoo haha. I hope I can go through with it without giving in for a wash. Wish me luck!

I appreciate your help!:)

Just wear a shower cap or put your hair up during showers, if it gets wet a little bit (and you're like me) you'll want to wash it lol

Ohh yeah That's happened to me before. And I think when it gets wet without shampoo it makes it more oily... Or I'm just crazy haha.

I think the thing that drives me crazy is my bangs. I have side bangs and they don't look so pretty after a day without washing.

I only wash mine once a week if it needs it, if I get my hair wet it feels oily but when it's dry it's perfectly fine.

Your hair gets oily fast because it's used to being washes everyday, as for the dandruff, maybe you're drying out your scalp from washing it so often. I suggest by starting to wash it every second day for two weeks or so, then, start washing your hair every three days. If the dandruff is still appearing, try an extra moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, preferably fragrance free because fragrance tends to dry out the skin. I also used to wash my hair everyday ( when I was in high school ) it would get oily so quick. One summer before completing my grade 11, I started washing my hair like I suggest you should, and the oil in my hair really stopped. I'm still washing my hair every three days and the oil still doesn't form as fast, but, if for you it does, try a dry shampoo ☺️

Thank you everyone!

It sounds like I definitely need to at least try it. Tonight's my first night skipping a wash and I'm already having the urge to wash haha. But hopefully it'll pay off in the end. Especially if it helps my dry scalp. I've had it since middle school and I'm going to be 22 next month so I'm so over it.

Dry shampoo will be my best friend for the next week or so.

I have an oily scalp too but I found that the less I washed my hair the less oily it got - and I think over washing making it over produce oils... So I wash 2-3 times a week and if I feel it's oily I use a dry shampoo in between washes but lately I've been fine without one - I use a clarifying shampoo (awapuhi by Paul Mitchell) at least once a week and only apply conditioner and other products to hair below my neckline basically avoiding my scalp to reduce any product buildup that could lead to oiliness too and that's what helps me to wash less

I am thinking about trying this again too. I also heard jumping juniper shampoo by lush is good for oily hair, so I'm going to try that. Have you tried dry shampoo? It's okay but for me, baby powder works much better. Try skipping a day, put your hair up or put a hat or scarf on.

Does anyone know if getting your hair wet in the shower but not washing it would be bad? Is it better to keep it dry?

Invest in a dry shampoo and also a tea tree shampoo/conditioner. It helps with dandruff, gets the hair clean without stripping it of it's natural oils, and helps grow hair.

I know the feeling, I used to have the same problem! I washed everyday and turns out it was ruining my hair :( and I wasnt using the best shampoo either so I started using a different product all together--moroccan oil shampoo and the hair masks. at first it was hard not to wash so often but It paid off! I wash my hair every 4 days now, its so much healthier :)
