I've had mine done, and the piercer told me before hand he hated doing septums bc they are so hard to get perfectly straight. His receptionist had hers done and told me to keep "straightening" it everyday and it would heal straight, and it did. Also, I believe they are not to be done thru the hard part, but the softer skin closer to the front of the nostril. My friend had a hers done in the harder part and it ended up getting really uncomfortable and she had to take it out.

If you pinch the inside of the nose you will definitely know what the sweet spot is. that's where it is supposed to be pierced.

It's not supposed to be done through the cartilage but I know people who didn't have space so it had to be done there, piercers don't generally like doing that though. There should be a spot between the tip of your nose and below that you'll be able to feel, it won't be hard like cartilage. Personally my piercer did a great job on mine getting it straight but I had plenty of space even though my nose is quite small haha. If you want your piercing to heal a little more straight you could try a curved barbel instead of a horseshoe bar? You wouldn't be able to see the piercing though.
